in tank fuel pump and sender

Hi all a bit of a daft question i am modifying a mx5 fuel pump and sender unit to fit in verticaly into my tank but unsure how low to sit the pump. Does the filter bag rest on the bottom of the tank or just a few mm above. Also how low do people have the sender unit float from the bottom of the tank ?

Neither of them want to touch the bottom.

Float wants to be off the bottom a bit so you have some reserve fuel after the gauge reads empty for obvious reasons!

And if the pump inlet is right on the bottom of tank they draw all the crap in that settles in bottom of tank and can damage pump.
Its a big problem on R32 Golf's if they are run low on fuel, the pick up sits about 2mm from base of tank.

I have modified mine to sit vertically and it sits about 20mm from the bottom of the tank.
