Locost 7 Weight

Hi all.

Looking at getting a Locost 7 with a CBR1000 engine, can someone give me an idea of likely weight.

Just concerned it will be quick enough (as a track only car).

Cheers Carl

About 480 kg will feel quick

Have you been in a BEC before?

Depending on diff ratio,it might run out of revs on long straights, but corners and acceleration are what a BEC is about

I did ask the owner about gearing, he reckons it will rev out at around 130mph, but can`t give me the diff ratio.

Sounds like a 3.38 but any gear speed calculator and some guesstimating will give you an idea

If you search YouTube will give you an idea of becs on track.

At Castle Combe last year there was a fast Striker with a R1 engine in it, spoke to the owner and he was just revving out at the end of the longest straight at 138mph with a 3.38 diff.
He was the fastest car on track easily, was passing everything with ease in the session I watched, which included a couple of fully caged stripped out track cars, one was a Focus RS.

Once I did 3 laps in a R1 engined Se7en around Brands Hatch, and only a Monster supercharged V8 could overtake us on the main straight.
Then we left him behind every time on the bends.

The accleration is almost unbelievable!
Downside.. it was like driving with a wasps nest in your helmet.
8,9,10K rpm all the time, to make it really go.
However, extremely quick, and very fast one the corners.
Not what I was looking for, but worth getting the drive around Brands Hatch
Great Track car, not what I would want on the road.

If you get it, thake great care to learn how it drives before pushing it to the limits.
Its a great car, but they can bite back hard if you get it wrong.

Just my 2d's worth

not many bec can get to 130mph even with the correct gearing, aero dynamics of a brick, even my zx14 on track best i could bet was 122mph on the straights, most tracks they are not long enough to get to the top speed,

best of luck though

ZX9 Mk de-deon locost 3.62 diff tops out at about 115mph but quick getting there.
High reving mental sound track very addictive prefer it over the car engine.
Get used to it before pushing it and watch out on damp roads as the back end can change direction

Cheers for all the input, guys.

I already have a Tiger Avon with a Vauxhall 2l redtop, but as an ex biker, I yearn for the howl of a bike engine, and the sequential box.

Ideally I would like a massive top speed, but have financial constraints, a mortgage, and a wife to keep!

As has already been said - aerodynamics are a big issue over about 120mph in a seven style car, remembering Speed has a square law relationship with drag (for a given frontal area and air density) therefore doubling the speed required 4 times the power to overcome the drag.

Worth having a look at the videos of JeffW's 400hp Phoenix to see what a more streamline body gives you (youtube his Goodwood laps and Brighton speed trials run).

If the CBR1000 is not up to the job once you have learnt how to drive it and push it to the limits (and probably beyond) then you could always take a visit to someone like TTS and get a turbo/supercharger fitted to bring it up to around the 250-300hp level. At which point the brakes will need updating, the tyres may need to be stickier and the diff worked on - a never engine cycle of upgrade is you future !

It sold already, what a bummer.

So will keep looking here for similar.

Great club, btw, can`t believe how much traffic there is here.

If that is the case, then if I were you I woukd be looking for a fury, phoenux or possibly tiger gta as these full body seven type cars may suit your requirements better, oarticularly the top end speed.

Of the seven type cars I think the striker is probably best suited to the bike engine but not many have gone down that route, difficult to find but occasionally do come up.

And if ypu are up for something a bit different, keep an eye out for the r1ot, basucally a mid engine seven, sweet handling and very light car.

If top speed is a priority then maybe a CEC would be better suited! I've never seen a Bec get close to the 138 mph stated above unless it's got a monster turbo bolted to it like Duncan cowpers.
You'll be lucky to hit 120 on track in a 1000cc bike engined 7 with a 3.38 diff. My radical wouldn't get much past there at most places!

Llandow looks fun, I have never been there, although it is by far the nearest track to me.

I guess top speed is not a major issue, I just don`t want to feel horribly slow, its about the noise, acceleration, and fun in the bends.

My last track car was a derestricted (as in the usual Jap import 110mph limit) MR2 turbo, I reckon I was getting to 130 at Silverstone.

Duncan's car will get well into the 160+MPH with a long enough straight. I can get high 150s down Lavant Straight at Goodwood.

Well the CKC trackday is on again on the 16th May. I'll be there with the Phoenix as will Raw with their various Strikers. It would be an ideal opportunity to get a Pax lap in a BEC if you fancy coming over.

A stripped out <450kg 7 type car with a modern 1000cc power plant. 13" wheels and a 3.38 diff will be on another level of performance to an mr2 turbo on track. The difference in braking and cornering will be incredible in comparison!
A good data reference would be a set of sprint results.where the various cars are competing on the same track on the same day in the same conditions! I'll try to find some on a circuit with a mix of slow and fast bends!

That is a great offer, cheers, but I return from my holiday that day (10th wedding anniversary).

Sure there will be other opportunities, I am planning to take the Avon to Anglesey sometime in the summer, if I do not upgrade it in the meantime.

Jeff,

Is it a coincidence that your data overlay looks like it has been lifted straight from Gran Turismo?

I guess there will always be similarities as you have to display the data somewhere. I would have done a slightly better job of it if I wanted to copy that though
