Noob build complexity

Hi all. I’m new to this forum and I’m looking at building either a Fury or a Phoenix however, as this is my first build I’m a little undecided on BEC or CEC in terms of complexity of build. I like the idea of a BEC (probably R1) but I’m not sure how much more difficult it is to put together than CEC with something like a 2.0 Duratc engine in.

I'm planning on buying some of the parts over the next few months before I purchase the kit, but obviously this is quite a big decision

For a bike engine you will get a cradle off the manufacturer. for a car engine its best to drop it at the factory and let them sort out fitment.

Complexity is probably about the same for either but IMO the cec route will be cheaper (depending on your power requirements!)

I'd say there's not a lot in it. You'll be making mods to both. It's just a case of doing your research and being methodical. It's all been done before and searches on here and the web in general will find most of the answers.

Both a Fury or a Pheonix are good choices combined with an R1 (OK I'm biased). Join JPSC forum for more info and check the JPSC and BEC sections on here. It's worth trying to get a ride in one before you decide; I'll be up at Blyton Park on the 25th July if you want to come up and blag a ride.

The other possibility is to buy a registered car and then work on that to get it to your prefered spec. It will be cheaper even if you strip it back to individual components and simpler as all the bits are already there and you avoid IVA+registration woes. Use it this summer, decide what you do/don't like and then alter/improve.

I think this confirms what I 'thought' might be the case and I will be weighing up the cost element as well (plus other factors). Thanks for the offer of a ride adithorp, I will look to get a ride in both at some point. Just a shame you're not a bit closer.

I still may consider buy a one pre-built although part of the appeal to me is building it from scratch, being a nerd that's one of the things that appeals most, although as you say there's no reason I couldn't still could strip a pre-built one and rebuild it.

Duratec is a great engine but you need some expensive bits to fit it
Bike engine needs 2 props and a revers box
I suggest you join a club and get some hands on help and advise
Often looking at a completed car provides the answers

Good opportunity to chat and get a possible ride would be at Kimbolton fair on the 12th July. Normally a good selection of cars there and i have always found the guys chatty. I am just a few miles from Kimbolton and always up for a chat. There is a company near kimbolton specialising in kits, classics and race cars, Cant remember the company name unfortunately but Jodi is very helpfull and has built a few kits as well, he will be exhibiting at the fair.

I may pop down to the Kimbolton fayre if I can but there also looks like there's a decent event at Earls Barton once a month that's worth a look. I'll keep my eye out for some near by meets.

Thanks for the heads up, the Earls Barton event is on tonight, looks good with up to 500 cars, classics. modern & kits. might just take a drive down in the tintop. Anyone going to be there?
