Has anyone changed their CWP themselves? Easy?

Im looking to change my CWP set.

Its a non LSD and works fine so i don't want to do any refresh work.
Is it easy? Do I need specialist tools?

Thanks

not done one in years but used to do them all the time when escorts were common. not too hard, setting backlash/preloads on bearings is the thing other wise you will do damage, torque cw bolts or better still lockwire them. sure someone who does them currently will be along soon

Sierra diff easy

You will need a couple of tools,

A deep socket for the pinion preload which from memory is 36mm, maybe 38mm. I bought a standard impact socket for a couple of pounds, cut it behind the 1/2" drive and welded in a bit of 2" tube.

Three leg puller to yank off the pinion flange

A tool to undo the castle nuts that wind the crown wheel into mesh, I managed to get away with a bit of rod across the assembly, better to buy or borrow the tool.

It's hard work gettimg the crown wheel adjusters off, soak in diesel and apply heat over a few days to get them moving.

Just swap the hits over and bolt back together, I reused the crush washer to set the pinion preload changed the seals and kept the old bearings.

If you put the crush washer on a metal rod and gently tap the raised area it grows in length, tighten up until it just starts to drag.

Put the crown wheel in away from the pinion, twiddle both sides in until it drags slightly then back out a small amount then march across evenly into mesh, I wound it in until it started to bind on the pinion then backed out a tad, you can break out the book and build to the correct torque buts It's already done 100,000 miles so just make sure it's a little tighter then when you pulled it apart.

2 hours easily once you have the outside nuts moving, if you strike the lobes with a hammer they will snap off!

Thanks for posting that up.

I did find that yesterday but assumed it was for an LSD.

Not done it but seen to recall needing to paint cw gears witb engineers bkue tk ensure pinuon gears mesh centrally, think that was for lr but suspect the same applies to ford.

Get it wrong and gears wear quickly and become noisey.
