Antifreeze which one....
So when I built my car with an ST170 engine, polo rad and a heater behind the dash I filled it with red 5 year antifreeze. Basically it's
horrible stuff so was thinking of flushing and using blue 2 year stuff...
Anything to consider? Or concerns...

I have silicone hoses and I am getting residue on the end of the hoses.... Not unheard of according to a local garage. The blue is less of an issue
apparently....

I used genuine ford coolant in my ST170. It's not actually any dearer than any others if you buy it from the right place. Search fordpartsuk on
eBay, I'm pretty sure that's who I bought it from.

Was the 5 year antifreeze you put in to a VW or BMW or MB spec ? That type has a reputation for turning to goo.
Flush it through properly, use acid flush , citric acid is cheap and ideal just use loads of water for the final flush.
Normal OAT coolant at 40 to 60 percent concentration is fine (GM Dexcool coolant is good and cheap) or you could use HOAT coolant.
OAT coolant really is significantly better on corrosion protection than the old style blue-green antifreeze as it doesn't loose its corrosion
protection ability with age, just keep the concentration and 40 to 60 percent and the pH in the range 7 to 8.

Trace residue at the ends of the hoses will only be there if you have tiny leaks. It is design to aid leak tracing.
You won't see a small leak because the water flashes off into steam ( which is invisible ) instantly when it escapes to atmospheric pressure.
The leaks might not even show up under a cold pressure test.
