sorry for late responses folks.....i drive trucks and do some stupid hours......
My project started out to be ........well.......not what it is now......
you see i started not having to spend any money and ended up trading and swapping bits......a whole car for a set of wheels for example......brilliant idea until i decided that the wheels wont do any more.
Chris i do get down to Leicester most weeks and i may be able to pick it up. failing that postage or courier could be arranged. i have a home made inlet manifold and exhaust, it also runs the standard ECU, so a ECU controlled Alternator will be great, the offer of the silver top alternator is a possibility but are they the same?

I would quite like 4 on 4 off at work.....but my boss wont pay the same minimum. even though i would work close the the maximum hours and way above the minimum we get paid every week.
we even have a weekend driver who works every friday saturday and sunday and he has requested to work opposite me, i would do mon to thurs him the other days....boss wont go for it because i might have a quiet day and he would have to pay me for more hours than i might work (not likely)
as for trailers ...if they are not right they dont go anywhere. its his fine as well as yours. I haul Lift tanks on 30' trailers and by and large get to keep the same trailer every day, i am constantly putting defects in when i change trailers and units he is getting the idea now and keeps me in my truck and trailer as much as possible.

Re dodgy trailers... You seem to have a dodgy boss there. I went to pick a loaded trailer last week and found the mudgaurd bracket was loose... Stood there for an hour while they transhipped the load. Its your licence so no excuse for taking defects out on the road.

Silvertop alternators are standard.

Blacktop alternators have smart charge and are ecu controlled. If you unplug the three pin plug they self excite.

Late blacktop / st170 are smart charge and have a clutch so can freewheel on over run.
