Cleaning up rear diff and gearbox.

I can degrease them with 'Gunk' but do people generally use to paint them? Spray them? Any specific type of paint or just good old spray paint?

Gave mi Sierra diff a brush off with a stiff broom and fitted it to the Indy.

Washed the g/box off with Gunk (or similar) and fitted it back on to a rebuilt Pinto.

No paint involved for me as you can't see those bits once finished anyway.

De-grease, jetwash And rotary wire wheel, then a few coats of Eastwood Spray Grey Paint, not the cheapest but goes a long way

Get your point, but focus on getting it finished, tested, registered and driving it.

There's a lot of people take a very long time building and then don't get it finished!

Jetwash good for getting 99% of the crap off but most seems to end up on you (me)
Finish with gunk/washing powder/whatever.

Prime ally (if you must paint it) with etch primer. That works well on bare steel/iron too.
Chassis black is pretty good stuff. Or almost any black household paint or decent quality.

And while its apart tear around the bell housing with a 2" hole saw and get rid of some weight!

Have to say, that I will always paint back axles gearboxs etc, it just gives a better look, and cleaner

But I didn't drill holes everywhere like Mark says, but I did grind off the bottom of the gear box to aid in ground clearance,
so the whole edge of the box is now about 10mm, not 40mm deep,

Yep! Two coats, no primer. Very tough paint, sticks to anything It's not very grey though.

Do you have a before picture? I have cleaned my Type3 gearbox a LOT and the mainbody of the case is silver like yours (i'm assuming it's aluminium) but the bellhousing has stayed black - despite being well degreased...

On my type 9 the bell housing was steel and the gearbox case was Aluminium.

The photo is after degreasing(with Machine Mart solvent degreaser, I have no faith in water based ones) and jet washing, but before the wire wheel.
