mexico gearbox

Hi,
I have just been offered a MK1 Mexico 4 speed gearbox with the removeable bell housing.
1:Will it fit my crossflow ? (1600cc)
2:Is it better then the 1600 cc Ghia gearbox thats in now ?
3o you think its worth changing ?

Your thoughts Please.

Thanks

Didn't the mark 1 Mexico have the crossflow engine? getting old and memory is not as good as it was , If that is the case then it will fit , even if they had the pinto lump it will still fit with the right clutch, as to it being better??

Hi Luke, can't help with the gearbox I'm afraid, but looking thru' your archives I was most impressed with your hardtop.
Would appreciate some info on it - did you fabricate yourself, if so how, etc. Definitely looks good though!

Standard box on Mk2 escorts was this one:

The one fitted to Mexicos was this one:
https://www.burtonpower.com/technical/tt_typeE.html
Which is just a close ratio version.

It should fit straight on, I think the clutches are even the same...but dont take it as right! Ring Burtons if you dont get and answer, they will be able to tell you.

If it is a Mk1 Mexico box it should have 2000e ratios or if you are very lucky Bullet ratios.

Normally MK1 Mexicos use the 3 rail Cortina Mk2 casing and should look like this
https://www.burtonpower.com/technical/tt_2000ebullet.html

However some were fitted with single rail type E boxes.
https://www.burtonpower.com/technical/tt_type3.html
The key thing is to check the first gear ratio by sticking it in first and counting the exact number of turns thast give one complete turn of the output shaft.

2.5 = Bullet
3 = 2000e
>3 = Base model Cortina

After that the next consideration is what type of bellhousing is fitted it should be hydraulic if it came from a Mexico or Lotus or RS1600. Normally on a 3 rail I would expect it to be the MK1 Cortina/Anglia/Lotus type. On this type the slave cylinder is retained by a circlip. On the MK2 Cortina type the slave cylinder a a flange fiting with 2 bolts, and a 3 bolt starter mounting.

I might add don't place too much reliance on gearbox info on the Burton site ---

Thanks Rusty,
It seem the only way to tell is to change them over to see its any better.
Thanks Geoff for the comments on my hardtop. Yes I did fabricate it myself, its made from 18swg aluminium and covered in external leather cloth.
Hi David and Britishtrident, thanks for the info. I will be picking the gearbox up tomorow night ,so will be able to tell which type it is.
Many thanks to all
