Ford Mondeo MK1 16 pin diagnostic OBDC

Son in law has just bought a very nice 96 Mondeo MK1 1800 -- one of those auction jobs go in for a Rover 400 and come out with a future Zetec donor cos its nice and the price is right -- Now that we have it home and have pulled it a part every which way and not found any fault apart from having to clean the headlight inserts it looks like a good 250 quids worth and is going to be around for a year or so :-)

Unlike what is shown in the Haynes book fables it has a standard 16 pin OBD diagnostic port which I am told is not quite to OBD II spec more a sort of OBD 1.5.

Before I go out and spend money buying a scan tool because Ford use a different OBD-PWM protocol from everybody else has anybody had any success using scanners on Mondeo Mk1 16 pin ports.
