rough sawn timber

If i go to my local timber yard and ask for 1 inch x1 inch rough sawn timber should it measure up as 1 inch x 1 inch or is this an industry understood thing where an inch rough sawn is not actually an inch?

I have ordered a considerable amount of it and its been ripped up out of a bigger piece which would appear to have been ouly 3/4 inch thick not the full inch and its no good to me at only 3/4 thick.

I only noticed when i arrived home and it had been delivered in the day.

as you may have guessed i have not bought timber from a timber yard before only from BnQ etc where you see the size on the shelf!

Rough-sawn is usually the size advertised - the confusion is when you buy planed timber where the given size is what it was before planing.

I think you've been short-changed...

Rough sawn in theory should be inch by inch if thats what you asked for, problem is these days it seems tolerances on standard timber sizes are massive and seem to be accepted.

Plamed comes out less. Have a quick search online for the standard timber sizes.

my take is that if its rough sawn then if anything it would be over sized.

have tried searching for standard rough sawn sizes but gave up after finding nothing but references to rough sawn timber and nothing to do with nominal sizes etc.

Rough sawn is usually pretty good on size. Complain if its miles under. As others have said its planed stuff that comes in undersize.

Whats happened , is the timber yard has cut up, say , 2x4, into 1x1, so the difference is the thikness of the saw blade.

If you need an exact size, you could use CLS (Canadian Lumber Specification I think) although this may not come in 1 inch thickness.

Hi ya, im a carpenter-
Looks like they made a cock up as sawn timber should be just about the size you asked for planed as said is the size before final planing- take it back wood is pretty much a bit hit or miss if you want exact sizes only way then is to do it yourself but even then it will vary !! cheers gary

This is a scam a lot of places seem to try. Rough sawn timber should be dimensionally accurate, within a small reasonable tolerance for drying out.
My local yard pulled the same stroke when I ordered a load of 2"x2" for a shed framing. What came was 11/2"x2". When I sent it back, they said they didn't have any 2"x2" so ripped some 2"x4"down.
Do not take any crap. Tell them you will go to Trading Standards, they will soon get you what you want.

WBP = Water and Boil Proof. It's an exterior grade plywood designation IIRC.

Sawn Timber

I don't know if your material has to be exactly 25x25, but a good way of getting sawn timber economically in this sort of size is to buy tiling batten. 25x38 and 25x50 are standard sizes, but I am not sure about 25x25.

Well thanks for advice,

took it back this morning and they were not very pleased.

Told me it came up under sized and i told them they were pulling a fast one and it needs to me a minimum of 1' thick.

I will be having the correct stuff delivered FOC tomorrow morning
