If not an 'Alpha Twin Cam' then what?

Thanks for the advice yesterday (See Alpha twin cam / pinto swap ). Perhaps an Alpha enghine will be too much hassle. So.....

The question now is what engine to use instead? Everyone has a Zetec and I fancy something a bit different. Needs to be light (or certainly lighter than my pinto), would be great if it could attach to my type 9 'box (but not essential) and not require a degree in electronics to get running. Think outside the box gentlemen....

It's Alfa. I don't know why, but that really bugs me

I don't know if the littler zetec S engines use the same bellhousing as the bigger ford blocks? They're supposedly really light, revvy little units.

What about a 1.6 Sigma from a Focus. They are nice and light and supposed to be cracking little engines.

Damn - beat me to it!

You'd need a bellhousing adaptor to connect to a type 9, but on the plus side the exhaust comes out the same side as the Pinto.

How about a Toyota Corrola T Sport engine? Again all alloy and actually manufactired by Yamaha not just designed as above

4Age? Chevy V8? Saab Turbo? Ford small block?

Loads to choose from that can whack the ar€e off a bike engine...

A rover 3.9 v8 could not only "whack the ar€e off a bike engine..." but would then chop that ar€e into little pieces, pan fry them and serve them with a simple salad and some Heinz salad cream

pah, then understeer through the first hedge!
Used to have the 8v old school alfa twinc in a mk2. Super engine and a very strong 5 spd box in most applications by zf i think. 100% reliable three seasons and in two shells.
Old hat now like i spose, gotta be a bike engine shirley in this application if your gonna be logical about it.
Try 2 twins as a v4 and enjoy creamy drive and traction to die for.........

striker/blade now complete, thanks to all on this site.

I would second the zetec se option. Pick up a cracking engine for £200 from the breakers. Works best with a set of carbs or injectors off a bike. Standard tune about 145 bhp or 160bhp with a set of cams. the bellhousing is about £200. My main advice is run a accusump. If you do reliability is a cert. They have tiny big end bearings so need oil pressure at all times!

Fiat/lancia twin cam, old but cheap, bullet proof, sounds great, 150hp easy, mates to fiat 131 rear wheel drive box.
Miles ahead of a pinto,no electrics to worry about.

Easy

And the prize goes to......

Johnmor!

Like the idea of this and the engine looks great.

The Zetec 1600S is tempting although power wont be much up on my pinto (150bhp).

Off to fleabay for a fiat twincam!

Cheers

Gary

AS much as I like old Fiat / Lancia TCs, its very old technology compared to a Zetec SE.

He'd have to buy an aftermarket bellhousing though, the Zetec SE doesn't use the old Ford bolt pattern.

I think the SE would produce more power as well. Bear in mind the 2.0 TC produced about 130 hp in Fiats / Lancias with twin carbs no emmissions stuff on it.

my se produces about 175bhp on race cams but for road use the rally cams are much nicer and very very tractable. also you can just throw them in. The race cams require cut outs in the pistons which is a bit of a bore as you have to split the engine. The last time we put some rally cams in the whole job took about an hour and that included grinding some shims down!

Maybe a zetec is the way to go after all. 1.6 sounds a bit revvy but is the right way round for the exhaust.

1.8 will bolt straight to the type 9 'box and with a slightly fruitier cam would be well up on pinto power. Could also use my current twin 40s. Would need to make a new bonnet lid for the exhaust though.

Does anyone know where I could get a zetec exhaust made to measure?

unfortunately the 1.8 has the exhaust on the wrong side and also has an iron block so is heavy. Stick with the 1.6, you can get an exhaust from any number of people powerspeed in kent did mine and were very helpful about £450 from memory
you are quite right about the bellhousing the iron block 1.8 would be ok with your bellhousing but is basically a reheaded cvh so is OLD technology
