Heads up for keeping your regulator rectifier cool

Just got one of these from Maplins for £5. The heat sink is 2" thick and the fan is roughly 2.5" diameter..
A complete bargain I thought and decided to share........

socket A CPU's are so old I'm amazed any shops still have them

I must have at least one of them sitting in old scrap machines and several others of similar size for free...

I had to have a similar thing on my old Honda VFR 750. A common fault is the regulator overheating and frying the battery. I cured it by using heat sink compound between the regulator and the frame, and fitting a 12V CPU cooling fan to the top of the regulator. It's surprising how hot CPUs etc can get.

I did something similar,a 90mm fan from PC World, although it cost twice as much at £10.

i know honda's are well known for failing, don't think its as much of a problem on r1's though.

still worth a bit of thought when it comes to positioning of it.

A lot of the newer bikes (including later R1s) have MOSFET based regulators that run significantly cooler and are very reliable so no extra cooling is needed. The earlier Honda regulators had a terrible thermal design, quite surprising given Hondas reputation of engineering excellence.

+1 the MOSFET ones don't get hot at all.
