R1 water system help

I need a bit of help with the water system as I think the previous owner has plumbed it up all wrong

When the dash reads 100deg I can still touch the rad so something is defo wrong

The bottom of the header tank go's straight to the top of the rad which I don't think is right?


The top of the header tank go's straight to what I think is and afterarket pump? Does the r1 not have a water pump?


Out of another port on the pump go's a pipe to the top of the rad but this pipe t's off down to the cooler

am sure bottom header tank hose should be t'd to bottom rad hose and top tank hose to bleed in top of rad
looking at the bottom pic. where dose that black hose go to which is t'd into blue silicone

There is also a pipe from the bottom of the rad. This gos to a metal pipe near the bottom of the engine close to the bulkhead

The black pump also has another pipe coming out the bottom which go's inbetween the throttle bodies to a metal hose but also has a small 10mm? Hose t,ing off and going down by the prop

seems all messed up mate.
bottom rad hose which currently goes to block near bulkhead could be correct but bottom header tank hose should T into this.
it could have an elecrtic water pump as some poeple do fit these for various reasons,but i9 have no experience with these sorry.
usually a header tank will have a bottom outlet which T's into bottom rad hose
upper outlet which goes to bleed in top of rad and an overflow in the neck of the tank which blows off under extreme high pressure. (this is just a vent and can drip on floof if necessary)

whats a cooler? the rad is a cooler! and the water cant be plumbed into an oil cooler or you will have serious problems

I think it's an oil/water cooler the two are separated inside the unit.

So where are the oil lines to the 'cooler' are you sure the coolant and oil pass through the same unit? I'm far from an expert but that sounds rediculous unless they are seperate heater matrix's
can you take a decent pic of the complete install

Yes it is a water cooled oil cooler on the R1. Looks like you are using a car rad rather than the bike one.

Is it a track car? I had an R1 Mnr with no oil cooler and never got it overheated once. Oil which is too cold can be quite harmful! What are oil temps like?

The bike has a laminova oil cooler as standard to the left of the filter. Not sure why you would bypass remove this? People often take an oil pressure feed off the hollow bolt.

Not sure why anyone would use an electric water pump in place of the mechanical one (unless they were trying to sort overheating problems caused by incorrect plumbing)

Looks like 5vy R1...?

Mine is pumbed...
Thermostat/top outlet (large hose) to top of rad.
Bottom hose/return (@bottom rear of engine) to bottom of rad
Small outlet (near bottom hose) to injector thermo housing.
Oil cooler outlet T'd to bottom hose (but T'd into top hose will work) (oil cooler is a water to oil heat exchanger and standard on R1's)
Thermostat bleed pipe (small one) T'd to rad bleed pipe and then to expansion bottle top.
Expansion bottle bottom hose T'd to top hose (T'd to bottom hose is better but the alignment is easier to top in mine and works).

I'm using a Polo rad, fan switched by theECU but with an override switch. Runs between 75 and 85c depending on ambiant temp but can get to 90-100c on track or in the mountains (or mid summer, rush hour Italian city traffic).

It's a 2008 rc8 engine which will be road, track and sprinted, just for fun

Can I do away with the pump then? Where is standard pump situated?

Also where is the thermostat located?

the thermostat is the black plastic housing to the left/above of the regulater in your second pic, is that what your thinking is a pump?
standard pump is internal if its the same as a 5vy, bottom hose from the rad feeds it.
