Crazy fuel consumption!!!!!!!!!
What fuel consumption would you guys get? I have a zx9r locost only got it out 3weeks ago for the first time. I filled it as it only had a little in
the tank(£36) and drove it for 50miles and it cut out due to no fuel! 75% of the 50 miles was hard revving and 25% bimbling about.
£36 is 5.882gallons so roughly equals 8.5mpg!!
That cant be right!!??!!

Not had a BEC for a while but I dont remember my GXR1000K2 lump being that juicey.
It was injection though which your ZX9 wont be so your onto a looser to start with.
Track days ARE the best thing since sliced bread, until I get a supercharger that is!

My first BEC had a ZX9R and I seem to remember fuel consumption was in the high twenties.

I have a carbed r1 and I get anywhere from 15 to 32mpg dependant on the amount of right foot. Average over a couple of tanks last summer was 26mpg

I would say you have something wrong there, with all my bike engined cars, I have returned about 28mpg on a run, 18mpg to 20mpg having fun, and 14mpg
on track.

Newark show and back gave around 35mpg, sitting at 70mph most of the way. Local roads driving "sensibly" 25mpgish, driving
like I stole it 18mpg.
Sounds like you need to get it set up on a rolling road, this makes a big difference to drive ability and economy.

Hmmmmmm. This has got me stumped.
I'll need to go and fill it again to measure exactly how much its taking and then record the exact distances.........sounds like a pain!
I'm glad of the responses as if it was 8miles to the gallon it would be fun to go for a blast and use 40squid each time!

It has been sitting in the drive idling alot whilst I faff about but still it's maybe only for only 30mins once or twice so fuel consumption
seems high. It seems to be very low geared with a 1600 escort back axle but again it still feels alot of fuel its going through.

My zx9 striker used to get 29/30 to a gallon on a run and the lowest about 16/18 on track days mixed driving around 25 ish....

Ive just gone out to investigate further. I put in a further £13 and its absolutely brimmed and even leaked out when it was too full so its either
got a really small tank and when I put in £34 it was flying out of the overflow, its got a leak and even although it didnt make the garage smell it
may just leak when driving or when it stopped earlier it wasnt fuel...........i'm kinda sure it was though as it turned and turned and then
started after putting fuel in!
I reckon on the really small tank. It makes more sense and then means £13 for 50 miles which equals 24mpg.

If you've got an Android phone, this (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aguirre.android.mycar.activity) is a good app for
tracking fuel usage. I just tap the details in as I fill.

If I press the sport button on my vectra's gear stick it does about 9 in the city, but that's from a v6 in a 1.5 ton car. Probably even
worse now as it won't idle.

It went again after you put in fuel??? i.e. when you removed the cap and removed a possible vacuum in the tank perhaps??
Make sure you have a tank vent. Cheap and easy check.
ETA
if £21 of fuel had leaked out or over spilt you'd defo know about it/smell it. So if it holds £34 and you onlu topped up by £13 then
you've not got a lack of fuel IMHO.

Fuel
If you have not got a non return valve in the tank breather/overflow as you call it .
It could well be causing a syphoning effect when you are driving, plus if you overflow pipe is lower than the bottom of your tank.
PERSEVERANCE is the word of the week. Stick with it the results are SWEET.

Thanks for all your help guys. I was scratching my head when it happened and couldn't figure out what it was and getting very frustrated
especially when I thought it was 6-8mpg and had swallowed all the fuel!!

I'm not sure Bill. I need to run it for a bit with an extra can of fuel with me and take an accurate note of the miles. I'm hoping it was
a freak thing, it hd sat idling for a long time before and cut out about 10yards from my house so maybe was fixed when I opened the fuel cap and it
maybe vented......I'm not sure but glad of the help and suggestions.

A quick Google suggests the highest ratio escort diff was 3.54:1.
Isn't that a bit low for a BEC? most people seem to aim for a 3.14:1 ratio.

Hi Neil,
I'm not sure. I bought it complete but with running issues hence the reason I'm not totally sure what size of tank etc it has as i'm
just getting used to it. It now runs and drives amazingly after a very talented bike expert sorted the carbs out.
I've not done many miles in it but have been in the fortunate position to have owned and driven alot of fast cars and this is quite wild up to
60ish so maybe quite low geared.

Twin dellortos on a 1.9 cvh and I get about 30mpg on a long/gentle run, down to may 18-20 if drving uneconomically on back roads.

3.62 is the common BEC ratio. Depending on wheel/tyre size, this gives around 10mph per 1000rpm in 6th gear, on most BEC's.

Ive owned a few litre (+) sports bikes in my time and don't recall ever getting the MPG's some of you are quoting for your BEC's.
How are you guys managing these figures in a vehicle 2-3 times the weight of the bikes?
