Just doing an quick service on the wifes tin top. Oil change, plugs change and air filter.

Oil and filter changed no problem.

Can't do the spark plugs at the moment 'cause you have to remove the inlet manifold and throttle body to do it, so I'll need a new gasket from the stealer on Monday.

Opened up the air filter casing to discover a K&N air filter. I know you can get proper cleaning fluid for them, but is there a 4.50pm on a Saturday alternative?

Wash it in petrol, preferably from the inside outwards, and once dry treat it with the correct K&N filter oil. Thats the way I do it, but I'm sure somebody will come along and say "you cant do that", but I have been doing it that way for a lot of years, and its always worked to date. Regards Ray

Replace it with a paper filter?
The kit just has soap in it. Im sure dish soap would cut the old oil easy enough.

See if your missus has got some hand-wash soap flakes under the sink. They're formulated to be fairly gentle with most things, so should do no harm to filter foam.

When you've cleaned it, rinse from the inside to wash the muck off the outside. When fully dry, re-oil.

I have a K&N filter cleaner pack, but that's only 1 can of muck remover (you still have to rinse after use) and 1 can of oil.
