Protecting a mild steel exhaust
Guinness - 30/10/07 at 01:45 PM

Following on from my other thread :- http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=76737

about replacing the down pipe on my wifes Pug, it arrived in the office by courier while I was out at lunch.

As it's arrived a few days in advance of me fitting it, my thoughts have turned to stopping the new one rusting.

I know you can get VHT paint from motor factors, but I've never tried it. Anyone got any success / failure with this type of product?

Demon Tweeks have this http://motorsport.demon-tweeks.co.uk/Products/ProductDetail.aspx?cls=MSPORT&pcode=NIM1004&grp=MP240

but at £25 a tin it seems a bit steep.

Cheers

Mike

Confused but excited. - 30/10/07 at 01:55 PM

Has to be baked prior to fitting, at or above the maximum expected operating temperature.
How about ceramic coating?

I wouldn't worry about it myself, how long did the current one survive for?

The car is a '95 plate, so 12 years?

Not sure how hot a Pug downpipe gets, but I VHT'd my mild steel BEC exhaust and didn't last - flakes of then the exhaust goes rusty

The down pipe get's so hot they don't rust as much as it looks.. It's were the water collects in side further down where things are colder is the real rust problem..

I would not bother rust proofing on the tin top..

25 quid a tin for VHT paint, eek! should be cheaper than that unless its something truly exotic!

The down pipes are usually made of much thicker gauge steel than the rest of the exhaust. They dont seem to rot like the rest of the system. I would leave it alone.

Hi Mike,

I have some that I could post to you if you still want to do it?

Do they not rust from the inside out mainly?
