Helmet
andylancaster3000 - 1/9/05 at 08:36 PM

I have found somewhere selling this helmet at a very low price...

http://www.nitro-helmets.com/product_detail.php?product_id=64

I would like to know how the standards which they state compares to the B.S. Type A, B, A/FR or Snell standards. I am only really thinking of buying it for road use and karting if I ever go but also was wondering if it is at all suitable for track use. I would assume it has been designed for some biker to slide down the road on his head (which I doubt very much is going to happen in a locost) so would think it would be ok for my purposes. I know you should never go cheap when it's your life on the line but it is a very good deal!

Latest ECER22-05 standard - this will not be acceptable if you wish to compete in motorsport.

The MSA (blue book) doesn't mention it so it is unlikely to pass scrutineering.

Never been on a track day so don't know if they go by the blue book or not.

Cheers

they never so much as looked at our helmets at goodwood andy. at the end of hte day its up to you as to whether you trust a cheap helmet or not. mine is an old bike helmet, has hte old blue bs sticker and matching numbers on label on the inside, doubt it'd make racing scrutineers happy though. its ok for track days and karting. i wouldnt' use a cheaper one though. a friend of mine flipped his kart, so in my opinion it is most definately a case of buy the best you can afford.

ECER22-05 is the latest standard and meets acu gold regs so it should be o.k.

Thanks guys, I have the blue book in front of me. It makes its very clear what is legal for motorsport but doesn't say what standards are not legal (other than Type B), but suppose that would be a very large list!

If (and when!) I do race, compete or do trackdays regularly I would definetly go for a better helmet.

After going out in Ox's car last night I think I will buy a helmet. An awsome car by the way Ox. I just want to keep the wind out of my eyes, and the grit. Will an open face helmet with visor be OK or do I really need a full face helmet? I don't plan to do any motorsport or even (m)any trackdays. I just want to drive on the road without my eyes streaming.

I just bought a new helmet from the local bike shop.

It's about 1/2 the weight of my old helmet and is for use on the bike not car. It also gives much better peripheral vision than my old one and is better vented. If a helmet is to the standard it doesn't matter what it costs but the standard of finish and padding materials used are what makes the difference. Fibreglass or composite helmets last longer than polycarbonate which should be changed every couple of years.

As a general rule bike racers wont use anything other than Arai or Shoei if at all possible...

Having seen my brothers lids after a crash and seen some scary results with the non arai/shoei lids, I will be sticking with them....

For cars there are some other lids worthwhile, but cheap bike helmets really arent a good idea for track use...

Not really true. Valentino Rossi - AGV, Marco Melandri - Nolan, Carl Fogarty - Shark (I think), Gregorio Lavilla - Shark.

hasn't that got something to do with sponsorship though?

I have a nitro N800V. Its a nice helmet, and is accredited to ACU gold and ECER22-05. Good enough for motorbike racing.

However, some motorsport specify that a helmet must comply with BSI standards. There have different tests (inclusing repeated impacts) to the European ACU standard. So are not equivalent. Shoei and Arai are nealry always BSI accredited, but they are 10x the price...
