BIG MEET - Suggestion

Chaps,

I know that there are lots of little groups that meet around the country (of which I still have to attend any), but was thinking that as there are so many on here building and driving, that perhaps a Big Meet could be organised.

I appreciate that some will have to travel a fair way no matter where it's held but I'd have no objections in travelling.

To ensure a big turn out, I'm suggesting (if the general concensus is in favour) that we have it no sooner than Summer 08 - just over a year away. That gives those starting kits now a chance to make it, and those like me a chance to finish the mods they're making to their cars.

Whaddya reckon?

ATB

Simon

only a year away, I've not even started the garage alterations yet!!!

Sounds like a cracking idea to me.
Maybe theme it on an event somewhere,
beer, bbq, sounds of BEC's and loud rock music!!!
Where do I sign?

Limeleight exhibitions some years back used to hold a one day meet at ( i think ) Hickstead showground, there were no traders it was just a park and chat meeting.

I think it was called the "rendevous" and made a change from shows with traders, you could ask the questions to the people who live with the car not sell them.

Simon its a good idea, you just need one very large field, some loos and a burger van.

Oh and probably a load of organising.

Don't forget the beer tent

Sounds like a good idea. I would imagine we might have some costs to sort out so we might have to do it on a ticket basis.

What about sorting for somewhere like a disused airfield. somewhere central in the country.

the type i mean is along the lines of bovingdon airfield in herts (or bucks) near hemel hempstead. They have a market there on saturdays and some driving schools use it a lot. It has been used for legal cruises as well. Its got a full airfield ready for a simple track to be laid out. All thats needed is to speak to the farmer and ask to use a portion of it.

There must be others in the country that are more central that do the same thing.

Sounds like a good idea that! How many do you reckon would turn up, as that may influence where we go? As said above somewhere like an old airfield would be good, perhaps with a little track set put for a quick blast around? That would mean an ambulance, marshalls and so on, so tickets would be a must for that, but shouldn't be too much. Would somewhere like Bedford Aerodrome be doable, or too expensive?

Go for it chaps - this has been tried before and the organisation became too daunting and the idea was dropped.

Doesn't mean it can't work in the future though

I think it's a great idea, but the stumbling block last time was public liability insurance, killed it stone dead.

Cheers

Note to all: I really don't know when to leave well alone. I tried to get clever with the mods, then when they gave me a lifeline to see the error of my ways, I tried to incite more trouble via u2u. So now I'm banned, never to return again. They should have done it years ago!

If you do it at an organised site they should have public liability insurance...

I woul;d seriously recomend looking at the Three Counties showground in Malvern, Worcestershire as its in a central location and they are pretty experienced at running the VW camper/bug fest, the big bikes show and vareious other cult motor club events...

Three Counties doesn't sound like a bad idea.

We used to have an annual meeting in the TVR 'S' club and would get nearly 100 cars. We could dwarf that without really trying.

It worked really well with T-Shirts being produced and sold, burger bars etc. We usually would go for a fair blat around the lanes at some time during the day. Raised a few eyebrows going through the small villages. No insurance implications as we are all insured for public highways... hopefully

We did it one year at Rockingham and parked up just outside the track. They let some of us take the drivers around for the parade lap and them gave us all a lap (or 2) of the circuit.

Another option would be to arrange it in conjunction with another event. Say the MC750 racing at Donnington. We could discuss with the track to see if we could get in cheap/free and park inside the track. Not much chance of a drive out then though..... But at least the beer and burgers would be available.

Whatever is arranged, to get the best turnout it would need to be fairly central, with perhaps an overnight option and something to wet the appetite on day two.

Sounds a great idea.

I know there are areas down near Rockingham that can be rented out for say a weekend as I've been to a few when doing BBC filming.

The idea of a Saturday night camp over is a good idea as people can have a beer or 5 and not worry about having to drive back.

There is also the big center up the Fosse Way IIRC just comming in to Coventry. Something like Warwickshire county show ground? I've been there a few times for the re-enactment fares and they have certainly large open areas.

Sounds like a great idea to me.

How about a poll? Consisting of county's where people are from, The most votes etc gets it?? or just a list of suitable places for people to vote on?

Warwickshire middle of WHAT country? We have a lot of us in Scotland, East fortune airfield near Edinburgh is more geographically central to UK, there are some places in Northumberland that might be good too!

Location, location, location.

I was thinking this might be the main stumbling block

I have a place two minutes from me (The Hop Farm - which has many many shows throughout the year including the War and Peace Show). This would be ideal, but it's not exactly central, so I'm thinking it'd have to be somewhere between Brum and Manchester. It'd mean a fair old trek for those on southern coastal counties, East Anglia and West Wales and a major journey from the northern reaches of England/Scotland.

A compromise needs to be made and, as the old adage goes: You can please some of the people blah blah blah except in this case, the more that are displeased the better, cos it's fairer.

I've no objections to it having to be a ticketed venture, say £5-£10 ish per head, but non profit (or profit to charity local to venue seems fairest).

Would prefer it to be away from major population centres (to prevent unwelcome visitors).

Large bbq/burger van, bear tent (with non alcoholic beverages for non drinkers such as meself), a larger tarmac area for a sprint (maybe).

I'll do a bit of research, and list things that'll be required, but I think a lot more members on here'll need to go along with it. I'd like to think that perhaps a hundred "7's", maybe better halves and sprogs in dd, so I'd like to think two to tree hundred people in all will attend.

Thoughts/ideas please

ATB

Simon

The UK of course, unless you want to go to the Republic of Ireland, there's only one country round here

The Geographical centre of Great Britain is in the sea near the isle of man. I can think of a good circuit near there. On the otherhand, the best place for a meet is near the centre of population rather than of land. Sadly for the Cornish, Scottish, Northern Irish and perhaps people from Northumberland or Kent, the centre of population is somewhere between London Birmingham Manchester and Leeds.

Sounds like Derby, Nottingham, Mansfield area then. Any ideas. I know there is a large park just outside Nottingham in Sherwood Forest. Might be suitable...

I think there is also a karting track somewhere closeby and a sprint venue..
