PPC £999 Rules

The first and most important rule in this event is keep to the spirit of the event. No one has yet been signed up by McLaren because they’ve done well in past PPC £999 events, so don’t try and win by bending the spending limits, knobbling other competitors or whinging to the organisers about the weather.

Entrants must spend no more than a net £999 on the vehicle, including any modifications.

All cars require a current MoT.

There will be a more details on the full rules in the new £999 section (coming 5th March)

The event will comprise of two tests. A tarmac handling circuit and a 1/4 mile drag runs.

How does the £999 thing work? (I know wait till the 5th of March ) but do you have to have recentish receipts for everything - ie you have to have actually bought it recently - or what's to stop someone with a load of stuff in their garage that they say is worth nothing (and they only bought it for sixpence in 1962 anyway) cleaning up? - or on the other hand if you own a tuning and fabrication company doing it 'after hours' as a 'hobby' and just claiming for materials?

It all revolves around "the spirit of the event". They say they are going to be a bit more strict this year because at previous events, some folk have been a bit 'creative' with their cars.
Basically, if you have a Golf GTi that you bought new in 1987, then chances are it won't be worth the same now. In which case, find a similar car advertised somewhere or a completed Ebay listing to verify the value. You can buy a car for over £999 as long as you can sell bits off it, to the max of £250, to get it under budget. You'll need to provide proof of what you've sold and for how much.
Consumables arn't included in the bidget but don't try to get away with fitting 12 pot calipers in exchange for the single cylinder sliding caliper because the pads needed changing and they were service items! The cost of the MOT is to be included unless you bought the car with an MOT.
You get the idea?

no, fair enough - I just can't help remembering the Reliant Kitten that won which, if you hadn't had a few bits 'knocking about' and umpteen years of fabrication experience, would have cost just a little more than £999.......

Although just having re read the original post..... drag race? where's the fun in that! loads of SpeedyXJS type wannabes in stripped out £100 Jags?....nah....

What do you mean?
A Reliant Kitten=£20
A brand new set of 8x13 Minilites= £12
A new set of trackday tyres=60p
A TL1000 engine=£5
The MOT=£2
etc........
Hence the tightening of the rules!

If I bought a mates ferrari for £500 he would learn not to do that again and I'd be down a mate

But that's where the spirit of the event comes in as it's obvious cheating.

I've done this event twice & likely will again, great fun!
As Owelly says dont take the wee & keep to the spirit!
It has to be within reasonable bounds for anyone else to come up with the same car you have.
As it happens I did own a Golf GTI bought for more than the budget, only a £1 over at £1000 but over all the same & had run it for several years before the event, to run it I would have needed to provide a few ebay ads etc for similar Golfs for £999 or less. It's no good turning up in a Porsche 911 Carrera RS with a receipt for £550 & you spent the remaining money on a set of road legal soft compound tyres, we all know it could'nt be bought for that & you would'nt be able to find any other cars on offer to back it up.
As for buying a Sierra rolling shell & sticking the touring car spec YB Cosworth engine in that you've had for ages wont wash either, for fitting significant parts that you already had then again you'd need to provide evidence that anyone else could have gone out & bought/built it under budget.

There is another factor to consider, if your entry is pretty suspect then you'll have the rest of the folk calling you a tosser behind your back, or mabye right to your face!
