Do I need a lacquer?

I have just finished spraying my engine mounts at the weekend using rattle can paint. I first used some etch primer, followed by a couple of coat of grey primer followed by a couple of coats of the colour that I want.

Do I need to apply a lacquer or a varnish?

The reason I ask is I manged to spill a single drop of thinners on one mount, and it stripped the top coat right off where it landed. Is this because the paint has not dried completely, or because I need a protector layer of some sort?

Thanks in advance for your help

Sounds like you painted it with a base coat so yes you need lacquer for resistance to chemicals and durability

Would it not have been better to powder coated them?

Possibly, but Raw didn't powder coat them, and I quite fancied colour coding them to match my bodywork....
