Making a RWD MT75 V6 G box ( changed title)
Hi Folks, i was pointed in this drection to yourselfs about this as you guys seem to know a fair bit about these gear boxs, not to mention allsorts of
other stuff.
I am building an off roader (sorry not a locost, well not yet but had ron`s book for a while and keep reading it) I have fitted a ford 2.9i V6 and a
V6 MT75 4x4 gear box but due to other modifications i need to get rid of the front out put as it is in the way of the transferbox front output.
Now i know that it is possible to make a TYPE 9 gear box RWD to match the V6 by using the bellhousing from the V6 MT75 box, jsu i need an detailed way
to do it, i dont fancy just pulling them apart without telling what i need and dont need etc.
I would realy appreciate any help anyone can give me as i am gettng to the end of my tether with this project.

Does the XR4i gearbox not bolt straight on without any mods??

isn't the XR4i a 2.8 Cologne engine like this? hmm can't mind, never owned one. anyway the input shaft is longer for the v6 than one for
the pintos

V6 bolts straight to Type 9. It's the standard fit in TVR S-series (and some Sierras?). I've got both in my TVR.
Type 9 is only available as RWD.

Yes, but the bolt pattern for the gearbox bellhousing might well be the same knowing Ford

yeah right!
I have the 2.8 fitted to a type 9, if the 2.9 is still the Cologne engine then no prob, Burton power has a good page on engine types. the input shaft
is about an inch longer than the one from say a pinto which caught me out before, so either the sierra or Capri (what I got) will do. Bell housing is
really heavy and has three bolt holes for the starter.

The 2.8 XR4x4 came with a 4wd version of the type 9 box.
The 2.9 4x4 used an MT75 box
XR4i used the type 9 with the Cologne 2.8i engine and had the longer input shaft didnt it??

yeah that is the one with the longer shaft, granada used the same engine.
never seen a 4x4 type 9, or one with a transfer box fitted, which would never have worked anyway since the transfer box would have had to be almost at
the back of the gearbox. Wasn't the XR4i just RWD and then there was the fancier 4x4 car with the alloy sump and the drive shaft and diff going
through it? It used a totally different gearbox, just thought how cool that would have been in a Landy

you can get a Type 9 in 4 flavours
V6 RWD
V6 4x4
I4 RWD
I4 4x4
in terms of MT75, you can get the following
MT75 V6 RWD ( very rare )
MT75 V6 4x4
MT75 I4 RWD
MT75 I4 4x4 ( cossie box ).
to make a MT75 V6 RWD, you can make it out of the front case of a v6, with teh I4 innards.
or caprisport do them for you

Is this a TYPE 9 then, was told it was out of a capri, year not known.
And the engine is a 2.9i colonge.

No thats an mt75
I would also add thats a 2wd I4 version from either a sierra or a granada with the 2l dohc and has never been near a capri.

LOL, been a Long day mate.
ok i have a V6 MT75 4x4 box and RWD MT75 to get the a RWD MT75 to match to the 2.9i V6 colonge.
So after all that i need to know how i go about bolting the V6 frot half to the RWD raer half.
Now that sounds better LOL

its definitly a I4 MT75, and as big wasa said, it will never have been fitted to a capri unless the last owner fitted it.
its from a sierra too, as the gear lever is in the middle of the support - granada gear levers are nearer the back.
if you have a 2.9 - fit a type 9 on it it from an xr4i or a capri 2.8. the gear box will handle the power - best to go for the xr4i as it has a
stonger input shaft than the 2.8 box.

ok, for £400 Caprisport will do the conversion for you.
on the other hand, are you set on the MT75?
A type 9 box will cost £50 a pop - so you can go through 8 before you get to teh price of the mt75. the 2.9 will be fine with it - i know i had one in
a capri - i even had a 24v 2.9 bolted to the type 9 - was ok but did chew 3 gear boxes.

The main reason i could do with staying with a MT75 is that i am told they are a lot stronger than the TYPE9, i will be running it in this and when i
am geared up there will be a lot more torquw going through it.

First off the 2.8, 2.9 and cossie 2.9 24V are all based on the same block design, so the bellhousing shouldn't be a problem
and any clutch issues can probably be dealt with by swapping flywheels etc if need be......
if you want a to build yourself a V6 Rwd MT75, I've been told before that you can swap the casings - but I never got the details
I guess you "just" strip down both boxes and mix & match the casings (and input shafts if they are different), but you'll need
all the re-build bits - it might be nearly as cheap to go to someone who already offers this conversion
assuming it was as simple as that you'd end up with your V6 rwd box
and you'd be left with a 4 cylinder 4x4 box (essentially a 2.0 DOHC XR4x4 or sierra /escort cossie 4x4 box, ratios?)
Its true that the standard type 9 isn't as strong as the MT75, but there are allot of strengthened type 9 gearkits available with a decent range
of ratios too - but I guess it depends on your budget ?
