I know this has probably been asked...
But has anyone got a BOM for the steel stock on a Roadster..
My local stockist has 25x25 x 2mm at £12 for 7.5m which souns ok to me. is 2mm wall ok for the main tubes? i notice the book says 16swg shicvh by my
calcs is thinner than 2mm
Cheers
TT
i paid about 3 times that for 6m of tube a few years back!
16swg is 1.6mm i think. there'll be nothing wrong with 2mm, it'll just be a bit heavier, but stronger too
what's BOM?

^ ah, cool
my local steel stockist supplys 1x1x1.5 for 1.60 a meter in 6mtr lengths.....
maybe i got all my calculations wrong when i bought some a few years back... ignore me
or maybe it was because i got it from metal supermarket, and
asked them to do all the cuts
For my locost I ordered this lot
25x25x1.5 ERW - £7.25 per 6.1m length - 6 lengths
25x50x1.5 ERW - £12.50 - 2 lengths
19x1.5 ERW - £4.75 - 2 lengths
25x1.5 ERW - £6.80 - 1 length
I wont use all of some sizes and Ill have to get more of others cos Ive changed the rail sizes and guessed at the quantity of triangulation.
Here you go see attachment.
Is the Roadster chassis close enough to the locost to use that as a decent guide?

Tenner for 7 metres 16swg from Ossett steel. Alloy sheet 8x4 is £48 2mm thick. Stainless is £70 for 8x4 1.2mm thick.
Unless the 2.0mm is really cheap I'd hunt out some 1.6mm if I was you.
Give it a few years and when you want some power upgrades, you'll be kicking yourself that you built it heavier than necessary!
I would check the Haynes forum about a BOM for that car. The Locost is close enough (but a bit smaller) so add a couple of extra metres.
Cheers,
