I have about 5 or 6 metres of 3/4" rhs left in the garage. I was thinking about running two of these parallel under the engine to act as a sump
guard.
Anyone think this is a bad idea?
Youll need some lateral support as well, but its a great idea. I plan to do somethings similar on my middy, as its a high risk point, just in front of the rear wheels and could be subject to speed bumps etc....
I was thinking about a ladder sort of thing.

I guess it depends on if you just want to provide protection from wide obstructions like speed bumps or whether you want protection from e.g. debris in the road.
I was thinking on the same lines for a diff guard fro my landie, except using rollers in between to help roll over stuff..... never got round to it
but maybe one day .....
... but as ^^^^, ladder will give a lot of protection byut sode law means you'll drive over seomthing that gets in between the
"rungs".
TBH, you mostly have to worry about speed bumps so the two side rails will be enough.
You can never plan for all possible type of road debris, but a plate over the gaps is the only solution for that. best drive round road debris
instead of over it.

I would not worry so much about protecting the sump but building a ramp in front of it to lift the car and avoid the frontal impact, you then just
need a couple of 'skids' along its length.
No good having transverse bars as these will snag, better a flat steel or ali plate I should think. I used to do a lot of off roading, this was the
prefered choice.
I am trying to find some 25x25mm nylon to attach to my lower rails, should slide over traffic bumps rather than grate the sump.
My car goes over 'legal' traffic humps no problem, its the 8" monsters that get me, or the very short ones.

If it is of any interest I may have a locost solution- after one of the rally stages at a local forest - the Malcolm Wilson test track we were
walking out when we happened upon a huge of underbody amour from presumably an evo or similar - it is roughly rectangular about 2'6" square
with closed cell foam on the inside.
We offered it to some stewards but they said keep it
Can get pics on Wednesday when I'm home but free on collection/ for the postage cost to anyone who can use it naturally first offer to speedyy
XJS man as he started thread.
