It's De-Dion actually and it's a 'dead' axle. Basically the diff is fixed to the chassis or a subframe and the hubs are linked together by a tube usually or sometimes a frame. This is a de-dion arrangement. Caterham have used one for some time, SSC use one on the Stylus, Dax have used it and also Tiger and MK to name two others. You get better ride than a live axle and better grip than an IRS. In fact if memory serves I think the old Rover P6(7)? 2200TC/3500s etc used it also. I think there are some pics of an MK one in the archive (when it's up again!). MK still have the jigs if anyone's interested?

I think that's about right. I'll measure an MK one when I get chance. Better still ask Steve Faunch, he's got an MK De-dion blade and he's on this list, I'm sure he'd measure it for you.
Look for an Alfa-Romeo 75 or Alfetta GTV in a breaker's as they had a rather tasty transaxle gearbox, inboard discs and de Dion rear end. Leaving
aside the transaxle, you may get some ideas from that.

according to your description i looks like alfa migh have what i am trying to build from scratch....... (many hours in it already)

www.carsfomitaly.com Alfa have some good pics - look at the Alfetta for pics of the all-in-one diff/gearbox/diff, and the Alfa 6 for a more convetional diff-only version.
It's probably of little help, but the Honda Acty van thingy had a neat de Deon, the hard bit would be finding one that hadn't disolved by now!
how hard do you reckon replicating the de-dion method would be on a locost. im thinking of getting a book chassis made for me and then modifying it to accept de-dion....... whaddya think
Only variations on a book chassis are the diff mounting plates at the end of the tunnel and the chassis bracket to pick up the panhard rod.

what can the curved axle be made out of???
also i want to stay narrow track with the half shafts from a sierra. this will need them to be cut and welded back together....... how big is this job
and should it be left to the pros.
