Surface rust is starting to show on my chassis, but I am a few months from shotblasting and powdercoating.
Can I just overpaint all the surface rust with primer?
Thanks.
Pat...
just wiped mine over with an oily rage whilst carrying out first fit, it kept the dreaded tin worm at bay, only bugger was cleaning it all off before
blasting. no reason you cant paint over temporarily as long as its only surface rust.

I've found this stuff to be pretty good.

Easy to apply, just wash it off when you're ready to paint.
Frosts and other places do the weld-thru zinc spray.
Used that on a few mini projects to good effect to avoid iron rot taking hold
Give it a wipe with a rag with some preserving oil on. When it goes to be blasted and coated they will totally degrease it anyway.
Cheaper than painting it!

Yeah, but it will all be oily and not nice to work on.
Guess I'll just stick a coat of primer onto the metal and rust, can't see it making it any worse.

Primer isn't really particularly good protection for bare metal - it actually isn't waterproof as such and can allow moisture to get through. Something like Davids Zinc 182 is worth using for the extra protection it offers. I think Halfords sell it, if not a decent paint suppliers will do.
