Underseal???
nick205 - 14/1/04 at 08:55 AM

Morning!

I have been thinking of applying some underbody seal or stonechip protection stuf to the more vulnerable/exposed parts of my Indy chassis.

Has anyone else done this?
Is it a good/bad idea?

Any comments or opinions welcomed.

Cheers

Nick

i havent done it yet, but fully intend to once it is primed, but only on the bottom of the chassis. Hopefully no one will say its a bad idea!

Nick,

I bought some Hammeshite branded stone chip spray in black from halfords about £6 for a tall spray can, i am using this for painting Uprights front and rear, hubs, wishbones, trackrod ends and will probably spray it on to the diff cage and the rear bars at the back that hold the fuel tank, underneath of engine bay lower rails, pretty much the bits that will be in the firing line for most of the shit.

It is overpaintable too as i am painting my chassis Dark blue and having my wishbones and running gear black, it gives a reasonable finish on its own though to be fair.

That's me decided then!

I decided on pretty much the same areas that needed protecting too.

Cheers

Nick,

As far as i am concerned its worth doing it properly.

We are all aiming to make a car that is reliable enough for us to get some decent mileage done in it, and what we dont want is a car that looks good when its being built in the workshop on the tressles but after a few thousand miles has rust spots on those surfaces exposed to the poo blast.

IMHO its worth the effort to get a good covering first time round and do whatever is possible to protect it,..... more time touching up the paint in the years to come = less time behind the wheel

dont forget under the wheel arches, stops rocks staring the gel coar

best off with that rubbery goop for under those.

i used roofing sealer stuff, loads cheaper (free) and easier to use than the propper stuff

Do you have a brand name, conrod?

theconrodkid - 14/1/04 at 04:58 PM

any diy type place should do it,for sealing joints on roofing felt

flyingkiwi - 14/1/04 at 05:59 PM

winner! should be able to get that from screwfix cheap then!

theconrodkid - 15/1/04 at 12:12 AM

was that a blatant plug kiwi?

flyingkiwi - 15/1/04 at 09:06 AM

ummmmmm, yeah

excellent, i bought the smallest tin of that stuff i could find, which was about 2 litres!

i only needed it to put a thin strip of felt on my shed after having to cut the roof in half to move it.

Looks like the rest of it will be stuck under my arches later on then
