My petrol tank (with fuel) sits in between the rear box section chassis and i can't get it out without taking off the body.
How close to the fuel tank can i weld brackets onto the chassis rails. I.e. not welding the tank itself but welding onto the rails around it - with a
MIG Clarke 151TE?

I would suggest draining the tank and filling with water.
It's a pita, but a lot safer
That said how close do you want to weld?

how close are you calling close, risk is not always how close you are to the actual steel fabric of the tank (long as no pin holes in it) but how close you are to vapour routes like, filler vents and outlets, mig sparks can travel a few feet in any direction if not shielded with same disastrous results as if 6" away. its a caculation of risk, likelyhood and precautions.
The tank is about an inch clear of the frame and i want to weld some small brackets for brake pipes on the box section on the side away from the tank
- just dont want to take the body off and the tank out - unless this isnt too bad a job?

As said before. Its all about the vapour trail.
Empty tank (I wouldnt fill it with water) and extend any outlets away from the area. Do it in a ventilated area.
Oh and have a fire extinguisher on hand!

I cant see you'd have a problem to be honest if you aren't welding right by a fuel outlet. You have an inch between the tank and chassis rail - so why not put a wooden board between the two as an insulating shield??

I remember welding my brothers Alfasud near to the petrol tank when I was about 18.
We had the fuel filler disconnected to gain access, with my brother plugging the filler with damp cloths.
I finished the weld to see my bother chatting with a neighbour and flames coming out of the filler pipe!
Didn't blow up though

can you not drill and bolt / rivet/ rivnut/ clamp the brackets you need to fit instead for now until you ever have the body off.

Thanks folks - don't think I'm going to try the welding option then will use rivets.
