just out of curiosity...

has anyone ever tried helium as a sheilding gas for mig welding? just wondering as i have 2 great big bottles in the cellar and an argon reg fits em. i know it used to be used for tig welding (hence the nick name heliarc) but is it any good?

cheers,

Russ.

I think helium is used more with aluminium welding as you get a hotter arc which means you can turn the amps down a bit and still get a good weld pool. Not sure how it would work with other processes though

i might give it a try some time, think it will be too hot by the sounds of it though. i dont like mig welding steel with pure argon so doubt i would like helium.

Cheers,
