Where can I get MIG shielding gas in Milton keynes?
Hello,
I've been tacking up my chassis with a gasless MIG, For my final welds I need to use shielding gas, but can't find anywhere that hires out
the bottles...etc.
Can anyone help me? (I don't want to use the disposable jobbies as they would almost certainly cost me more in the longrun)

Tricky one. In thoery you need an account with BOC etc. and it starts getting very expensive unless you use an awfull lot.
It seems most people (apart from me) seem to know a friendly landlord who is happy to lend out the odd bottle.
Don't discount the disposable bottles for occaisional use though, the high capacity ones do last quite a long time as long as you don't
crank up the gas flow to silly levels (I did most of my chassis with one bottle).

Alright then i'll use disposables, must have had the regulator whacked up much higher then it should have been when I used one once.
Cheers

Metcalfes have a branch in MK try them as they deal with Air products who are cheaper than BOC........Cougar 5 i think they call their 5% argon mix

Yeah I tried Metcalfes, they didn't even know of anyone who could do it! I'll just use disposables. If anyone here is from MK Metcalfes is
a great place to get good quality consumables. These Dormer drill bits are unreal compared to stuff you get in hombase etc..

Theres a BOC agent just near bedford that i use. I'd have spent a fortune on those disposables doing all the welding i've done (not just
my chassis), so the boc contract works out cheaper. The size X bottle costs about £25 for a recharge and holds 40 times the amount of one of them
small disposables.

bottles on exchange for about £20 inc vat, but thats 90 miles from you . I found this out the week after

ive wasted a lot of gas by not turning the flow regulator off after use, it leaks through the torch over a few week if you have a cheaper machine
(clark!)
Ive also used about 10 bottles to date...

Why are you using gas with a GASLESS MIG?
You should be using Special wire and no gas. hence gasless!
How are you controling the flow of the gas.
Scot's do it better in Kilts.

You could use CO2 as the shield gas and use pub bottles. Fire extingisher companyies will refill them.
CO2 give different peretration characteristic from argoshield but is still a valid gas for mig steel and stainless steel welding.

Ended up getting a 1KG refillable bottle from motorserve, you buy it for £23 and refils are £9.
Not bad
