front suspension

Hi Hornet, I know i,ve said this before but here goes again. looking at youe sketch you seem to have every thing right bracket wise. when i built my chassis i came to the same conclusion as you ie brackets hanging half off la & lb in order to accommodate the correct castor angle. what i did was shorten the top rails by 25mm & made la & lb longer to meet up with the top rails, bear in mind nothing changes bracket positioning wise, but you finish up with the top brackets sited more centraly on la & lb. also fit your cortina uprights, level your chassis, set the stub shaft at 90 degrees the chassis ctr line screw two set screws into the brake caliper holes, they lie in the same plane as the swivel holes, get yourself an adjustable protractor from a combination set and set it to 5.30 degrees and place against the set screws. move the top brackets forward or backward in the horizontal plane till the bubble shows level and your castor position is set. cheers davef.

TBH Dave.. when i tacked brackets on other night.. I thought to myself... I remember DaveF's comments about LA and LB being wrong.....
And now.. it looks like you were right.... what i still dont understand though is... there are many "book" chassis builders out there yet they dont agree with us....???

It is now well known that there is a problem with the bracket positions in the book.I welded my chassis up complete and then came to the conclusion that the brackets would not fit in the correct position with the correct castor. As i could not change the chassis i moved the brackets as far over as i thought acceptable and then made two new top wishbones with an extra 10mm of offset.

Hi Hornet i dare say there is possibley people that would,nt agree, but you will probably find they have already completed their welding, and now find it,s to late to correct it. i have seen photos on this site of the said brackets literally hanging of LA & LB and then having to be supported by a strengthening gusset, when all that is required is to lean LA &LB back a little. and when you consider all the comments about the book not being gospel, then i don,t see the problem. if you look at the photo section on davef,s section there is a photo p7140805 where you can see the top front bracket and it,s more favourable positioning. cheers davef.
