Ali chassis

Im thinking of making an ali spaceframe chassis but have had the thought that if i do my body in ali i could tig weld it along every tube.

Ive got quite good with tig so the manufacture isnt a problem and it would be an amazingly strong chassis even though very time consuming.

Anyone think of any major problems?

Carnut, Ali chassis really don't come recomended because they have a service life and while ali can be suitable for use in a single season race car, you should really really know what you're doing before you start. I'm guessing that you're not a pro welder, so, I'd say you'd be best sticking to steel.

If you really really want something a bit different, and possibly lighter, then you could think of making a chromoly chassis, although you'd be wrong to assume that you could just go for a thinner grade throughout. It would require some sort of assistance from a qualified engineer to tell you what you can and cannot do. Chromo also requires preheating (this is a hottly debated subject though, so it may depend on gauge) and it also require normalization after welding, what fun.

Naturally, this is only my opinion, and if you really feel that you know exactly what you're doing and have all the requisite skills and knowledge to achieve what you want, then fine, go for it. Just don't expect me to want a ride in it.

See the other post of the same name for more info on ali chassis.
