roll cages and IVA

i know i should just look in the manual but i'm at work and have just edcided that i need a full cage in my locost and as i'm at chassis stage i may as well get stuck in now.

what is the min radius of the tubes the cage has to be made from to satisfy IVA and what thikcness do you recommend. I dont think i will be racing the car so it wont have to satisfy MSA (although i will probably try to build to that level anyway)

does anyone have any suggestions about designs of the cage? where to put the mountig plates?

I don't think the IVA will care, you could make your roll cage from cheese so long as it meets the external radius requirements (~5mm or something (check manual) so you should be fine after all the tub will be bigger than 10mm in radius!)..

I think Caged do a roll cage kit for locost that isn't too expensive - I'd do that if I was you - or other kit , NTDWM etc.

Well normal roll bars and their braces are around 40mm and 50mm, so I guess thats fine for a cage. I'd also opt for a thick walled tube, so around 2.5mm or greater.

Are you following a design for the cage? I'd be tempted to do it properly and copy one, or get one fitted. I know its not for racing, but its still important (people with more safety features tend to drive more recklessly)

i get what you say about buying one, but right at the start of this build i made a promise to myself that i would build as much of this is a could and only but the bare minimum (donor car)
i have quite an extensive selection of tools inc a very good pipe bender. i will be doing it all properly (fishmouth joints, proper bracing) and have built roll cages for tin tops in the past, one of which was tested in a very nasty roll and definately saved the lads life (invalidated his insurance though as he never told them about it being fitted) . they were all built to plans found on the internet.

If anyone knows of a good plan to follow I should be fine to build it. pretty handy with a TIG really

I vaguely recall that the only roll bar/cage issue is that it needs to withstand a force 10(?) times the proposers body weight!?

Thats off the top of my head though, so may be completely wrong or for something else
