mc sorley 7+4 Help?????
Hi im after some advice ive been looking on this site and many others for some time now and now need some advice. Unfortunatly my funds im only 15
(and dad) wont stretch to buying a ready built chasis such as the MK Indy and so the only feasable option is to build my own. Th
The first obvious choice would have been the original locost built by ron champion but after being told by many people that some of the measurements
were inaccurate i decided against it. I finally decided on the mc sorley 7+4 plans as this uses seirra running gear wich i already have.
The question I wanted to ask was is there anyone who had already built a locost from these plans or is currently building one from them and any advice
they had to give on whether all the measurements and dimensions are accurate as i am starting construction in the next few weeks and can not afford to
waste materials or time in back tracking to undo inaccuricies.
Thank you for any help or advice that anyone may have in building this particular locost or the build ahead in general thanks Mat

Hi Matt,
I think you are wrong about the McSorley plans using Sierra parts.
I know Jim (McSorley) quite well and I'm pretty certain he has never even SEEN a Sierra let alone designed for one!
However, he may have plans to in the future...I suggest you e-mail him from his website.
Good luck,
Alan B

Hi Mat,
Sorry to disappoint you but I'd have to agree with Alan. Jim McSorley is based in the US where they don't have the Sierra and as far as I know no
one has sent him the Sierra running gear dimensions.
You should also note the difference between the Sierra and MK2 Escort running gear- the Sierra uses an IRS (Independent Rear Suspension) system and
the Escort has a Live Axle system.
They're completely different and you'll need the chassis to have a very different back end if you want to use IRS. The Sierra track is also
(*aproximately*) 7 inches wider than the Escort.
Bearing in mind what you've said about the time and cost issues I'd recommend the following to you:
Download the McSorley plans for the standard Locost- it looks the same as the Ron Champion but Jim has corrected the cutting list etc.
Search for a MK2 Escort (you'll find one by the time you really need it!).
Build a standard chassis and make life easy! (Well, easier! )
If you *really* need the chassis wider then use the McSorley +4 plans but then you'll need a wider Capri axle (I think).
Or, use the Sierra running gear, design for own chassis and (like me) still be finishing the chassis off nearly 9 months after you started!
Anyway, good luck,
HTH,
James

I think i confused you all slightly by saying that the plans i had were to build one using sierra running gear but infact are the normal plans that i
intended to use and adapt to accept the sierra rear axle etc. I already knew that the sierra was 4 inches wider thats why i chose the 7+4 and just
wanted to know if any one had ever attempted the same build and how had they got on.
Thanks for any advice and sorry about the confusement

The Sierra is more like 7 inches wider not 4 so be careful what you're doing with your front suspension!
Good Luck coming up with an IRS design.
