Jimmy jeep a good bet?
Mr Whippy - 23/6/23 at 06:45 AM

Hi,

My old Fiesta is really starting to show it's age and approaching 100k, so I'd like to replace it. Not sure why I've not had one before but I have my eyes set on a jimmy jeep. Apart from looking out for rust. Is there anything I should be looking out for?

Are the reliable, known issues? Anyone used one for towing, is the 1300 engine up to much?

My budget is about 5k so should be able to pick up a half decent one to use a my daily. Most journey's will be on the bypass at 55mph (my normal speed these days) so fuel should be ok.

Advice appreciated, thanks

Can't tell you anything about relaibility, fuel economy etc.

I can tell you they're called "JimNy" though, not "JimMy" though.

What do you want to tow? At 1300kg max it wont be much!

550kg braked trailer tent, double axle braked unmarked weight trailer and a single axle unbraked trailer. Fiesta is too puny to pull the double one very well. But the 1300kg limit might be ok. cheers

if I remember correctly, Jimny's are sought after for building kit cars... since they have a separate body/chassis.

Think you may be right.

Don't Jimny's have live axles, maybe a move on from a MK2 Escort.

New Jimny actually looks more like a defender than a defender does. The old ones seem crazy expensive though?!

Only when one is "...far away"

Jimny's have a cult following in 4x4 circles and generally go for a lot more than you expect them to. I'm not sure I'd expect it to be happy even near its max towing capacity of 1300kg, but maybe.

It's also not a jeep, if you allow me to continue the pedantry.

Saw an advert on ebay where a porsche macan got described as a 'nice jeep'. Ferdinand would be turning in his grave!

Mind you, he'd probably already turned a few times when porsche suvs got made in the first place...
