No system to it, just have a stab at something you like that is 17 digits long.
Mine is made up of the manufacturer, my initials, my engine name / cc.

unless someone corrects me, I seem to recall it being a minimum of 9 characters and max. of 17. Mine is 13.
you can use digis 0-9 but there are certain letters you cannot use; don;t recall full list but I,Q and Z spring to mind.
Mine numebr has O (letter O) and 0 (zero) - I wonder what the log book uses??!?!
And it is totally stupid in having to choose your own since it needs to be stmaped into the chassis for SVA but you don;t lknow if it is unique i.e.
allowed by DVLA when you come to register.
All DVAL cans satell you is if the number you choose is not used at the time you ask but when you come to register, you may be unlucky to have been
gazumped.
So do what I did, choose a short number for SVA then stamp on extra digits should you have a problem for registrtaion.

When I enquired with DVLA I was told the following, in writing
"We have been advised by VPG that applicants who wish to register kit vehicles may use their own VIN numbers or the kit manufacturers VIN
numbers.
The Vin Number must be formatted as outlined below:
The VIN Number must be unique to the vehicle concerned and must not deliberately or inadvertantly copy a sequence of letters and numbers already
allocated. If in doubt seek advice from VPG via LOD helpline.
It must be made up of between 9 and 17 digits and must not contain Q,Z, and I "
I have no idea who VPG or LOD are by the way..
Hope this helps,
John

And when I asked for my made up number at Leeds DVLA, I was told that you cannot submit your own and I will be allocated one upon application.
Pat...

I was told the same at Edinburgh but also told I needed the VIN before SVA but they could only allocate one with all the paper work, including MAC
!!!

And you can't pass an SVA unless it has a VIN!
Section 22 of the SVA manual "Manufacturers Plate"
"1. Check the vehicle is fitted with a 'manufacturers' plate securely attached in a conspicuous and readily accessible postition
that displays the:-
o Manufacturers Name
o Vehicle Identification (Chassis) number
etc etc."
The way I did it was this.
1. Make up your easy to remember personalised VIN number, preferably 17 digits long.
2. Fill in the SVA form, on which Q1 is "What is your VIN number?" and has 17 spaces next to it.
3. Post the form to Swansea.
4. Swansea enter the number into the 'puter or not, doesn't really matter at this stage.
5. Swansea write back to you, this time with your VIN on the letter, asking you to confirm that you are an amateur builder.
6. Write back to them, with the VIN on the letter, confirming your status.
7. Get the appointment for the SVA, which will have the VIN number on it.
8. SVA the car, pass / fail.
9. Go for the ineviatble re-test
10. PASS
11. Show up at the DVLA, where the hapless monkey now has several bits of paper, all with your VIN number written on them. Some even sent from the
hallowed place of HQ (Swansea). I reckon by that time your VIN is so far in the system they'd be hard pushed to make you change it.
All in my experience at Newcastle!
Mike

Note to all: I really don't know when to leave well alone. I tried to get clever with the mods, then when they gave me a lifeline to see the
error of my ways, I tried to incite more trouble via u2u. So now I'm banned, never to return again. They should have done it years ago!

There are standards in the world:
http://www.sizes.com/society/vehicle_identification_numbers.htm
I would sure not use in the first digits:
WFO(ford)
WOL(Vauxhall)
WVW(VW)
etc.
Maybe you could get a number from DVLA?
