Toyota 4AGE, need to budget about £300 for bellhousing and clutch though.

Pinto heavy and doesn't rev, past it's sell by date and not suited to these cars anyway IMHO.

Zetec is a good motor but not as revvy as the Toyota but does bolt straight up to the type 9 gearbox.

Last year at my clubs trackdays we kept seeing 160BHP 4AGEs (16V and 20V) eating 200BHP Zetecs (supposedly) for breakfast.

Around Llandow, which is a tight short track, the 4AGE powered cars would be lapping Pinto (mostl standard 2l) engined cars every 6 or 7 laps and the Zetecs would only take a few more to catch.

The most impressive thing for me was passengering in a 165BHP 4age car as it went around the outside of a 190BHP Dunnel Zetec on the entry to the straight, across the track passing a 160BHP Pinto and a known 220BHP Lotus 2.2 car before breaking from 115MPH into a 30mph corner. When I looked back after the complex there was nothing behind us.

The Toyota lump gives most of the pleasure of a bike engine but still drives like a Golf around town .... best of both worlds for a road car.

Duratec is a good lump too, not sure what it would cost to get one in though

i'd virtually decided on a 4age already. For pretty much the same qualities plus it sounds great and if you chop the timing belt cover it gives a nice 'hiss'. Plus the MR2 boys have been playing with them 4 ages (do you see what I did there?) so there is lots of tuning info on the web.

Udny eh? weel be fechting oer the saim ongine then chiel!

The toyota.

Because the Ford BDA is an all time classic and the 4A-GE is err - very close in concept. If you see what I mean.
And it responds very well indeed to tweaking.

Guess I'm looking for a 4age then :-)

I had called Raw a few weeks ago, and to buy all I need was working out at £1800. The biggie was the electronic ignition and carbs, which sucked about £1200. Bell housing was £300, Engine mounts £40 and Exhaust £300.

If I source an engine, can the orginal ignition and injection be kept?

And how would the engine mounts sit with the avon chasis?

Has anyone put a 4age in an Avon Yet?

and "Furry Boots is Udny? ... near aberdeen...

I know one of the members of South West Tiger Owners Club has.
His name is Scott and you could find his email address on the 'members list' at www.swtoc.co.uk (you'll probably have to register).
I'm sure he'll be able to answer any questions you have.

Regards,
Andy.

4age engine a spot on choice.
I used to run a modified Mk 1 MR2 and this engine is unburstable.
(Wish I went down the 4age path than the zetec).
I can strongly recommend getting in contact with Adrian Smith of Fensport in chatteris. He is probably one of the leading importers of this engine in all variants inc 20V head version. Has many years of experience with the 4age and would give loads of help. (take a look at his website and see his demo car!!) (no I dont work for him!!) Good Luck.
