Hello all,

Went on my first track day today and it was great had a lot of fun and managed to spin the car.

All was going well until I was giving it some and it started spluttering then died. I got it towed to the paddock and began investigating and noticed there was no fuel in the fuel filter and the pump did not prime, so ran a voltmeter to the fuel pump loom connections and it gave no volts, so wondered if it was a loose wire and ran cables direct to the battery from the fuel pump and still nothing!

So, is it likely to be the fuel pump packed in or will it be something more sinister?

Any advice welcome as had a great time and want to get it back up and running asap! Just a shame only got the morning in



Mind you, had a few laps as a passenger in an R500, that is unbelievable!!

if you ran cab;es from the battery staright to pump you should still get a voltage across it.
very strange. everything else electric working properly?

edit, forget that, read it a bit wrong.
all fuses ok? did the pump packing in also blow a fuse?
if you ran cables direct to the pump and still nothing then sounds like its broke, but if you've got no voltage to it, sounds a bit sinister

I agree, for some reason no voltage to the pump through the normal loom, but when connected direct to battery get 12v but still does not pump......

Check the earth.

Even when it was connected direct to the +ve and -ve terminals it still did not function....

hit it.

Hmmmm sounds like the pump has jammed. As suggested try hitting it. If that fails, you may have to remove from car and connect to a battery and thump it various ways. I tried this on my fuel pump when hitting didn't work and it cleared itself with a croak and spat fuel all over the floor. I fitted a wee Halfrauds plastic filter as a prefilter and the pump has done another 700 miles so far with no probs. Cheaper than a new pump!!!!

What pump is it , i have just checked my spare Facet ( which i am going to double bank just incase no1 fails switched seperatly) and found that the earh terminal was not crimped on tight enough as when pulled slightly with a meter probe on it it fell off , pleased it did before i fitted it , job pending for next week.

Did you build the car, if not you may have an inertia switch somewhere that simply needs pressing to reset it. Follow the wiring!!

Just re read this thread properly and I now agree, take it out and hit it

Thanks everyone, once I get the car back tommorrow I wil try hitting the fuel pump from various angles!

But why would there not be a current through the proper loom to the fule pump? Relay gone?

As mentioned above have you an inertia cut off switch fitted somewhere?

i had the same thing happen to me on a track day it ended up being blocked jets in the carbs i was running a 98 r1 eng to.its worth taking a look i found i could see some black rubber like stuff in the fuel filters. turned out to be what some one used to seal a part to the tank. thought my prob was the pump

Well, got car back, connected pump directly to battery and still nothing, even after a fair few bangs with a hammer!

Also, tried testing the relay (using haynes manual as reference) and not sure if that ha gone also!

Still, at least the weather is crap!

sounds to me that the pump has gone. If you have given it a tap and it has not got it going and there is a direct supply! There is not a casing at all on it that has other wires behind it. Maybe one of those has come off? If the pump has gone that wrong. Check that a supply fuse has not gone. If you have no fuse the pump may of gone wonkey and taken the relay with it. Unusual though.
