Moral of this story - dont work on your car when you're angry...
Minutes after breaking up with my stupid bitch of a girlfriend i decided to drain the oil from the R1 engine on the MK indy I'm building. Anyway
classic schoolboy error I managed to strip the thread off the sump by turning the bolt the wrong way. What do I do now? Do I have to take the engine
out and take it to an engineering place or is there anything I can do to save it??
Pissed off Paul
i am sry 2 here that paul, and i am sry i dont no what 2 do about ur sump
Philip
What thread is it, is it the sump plug?? If it is you can take the sump off and get it welded up, redrilled and re-tapped.
If it's a sump bolt then I think you can get helicoil inserts which some of the guys here have used and apparently they are excellent.
HTH,
Rich.
Hi Phil Hope the cars making progress I'll have to come round and have a look soon
Rich - its the thread on the inside of the sump itself - the sump plug, which i used a 19mm socket to get off, is ok. I really dont want to attempt
taking the sump off - it sounds like a big job. I'll have to look into these helicoil things i think
Cheers
Paul
Paul,
I'd be tempted to take the sump off if only to clean it out and make sure no fragments of the knackered thread are left in the oil. While
it's off you can get it repaired ass well.
HTH
Nick
PS - bad luck with the girlfriend, but hey you've got more time to spend on the car now

Take off the sump as nick205 says not only to check for fragments - but to retap it
A lot of bike racing lads end up re-tapping to larger sump
plugs due to the frequency of oil changes they do and so the oil comes out quicker with the larger hole.
Easy job -

Your gonna definatly want to take the sump off if its getting a helicoil as to fit them you have to drill/tap the hole, its going to make bits of
swarf.. Also the tools are quite expensive even though the coil itself is cheap, so you'd probably want to get an engineering shop who already
has the kit to fit a helicoil to do it anyway, in which case your going to have to take it off.
It shouldnt be that big a jobI wouldnt have thought
Cheers for the replies lads - looks like the sumps coming off then, that should be fun.....!
And your right Nick - her endless nagging is the reason it isnt finished already!!
Shouldn't be too bad a job mate once you've drained the oil.
Rich.
try having a wife who's 6 months pregnant and wants to spend all available cash on baby paraphenalia
it's getting harder and harder to
justify spending on the car I can tell you
Still it'll all be worth it - won't it?
Cheers
Nick
Yeah it'll be worth it all in the end I know. Just wanted to get it finished before winter cos I've only got my carport to work under!
I know 'SWMBO' constantly comments on how much time we spend on "the car". In my case I simply say "if it isn't the car,
it's going to be something else". It's almost like an addiction to do things with my hands... constantly!
If you think building one is bad... you should try spending 28 hours a week everyweek after work for 6 months building one... then 6 months later
starting all over again
Didn't go down too well....
Nick
Sorry if this is late but congrats on the future new arrival!!
You won't regret it!!!
All the best
Mark

Mark,
Cheers for the kind words and yes I do remember my original post on the subject - makes for interesting reading now
Cheers
Nick
Well it was surprisingly straightforward getting the sump off (got a face full of oil in the process tho!). Unfortunatley I've cracked the area round the sump plug so gotta get it welded up. Thanks for all the advice though, I'll stay away from my car the next time I'm in a bad mood!
My wife never complains about me working on the car, I told her I work on the car or we have sex.
My wife said "It's me or the damn car"
It's tough but I'm going to miss her.
Cheers
