I'm planning to buld a Zetec engined LoCost and have just bought a set of carbs from an R1 which I intend to use with the MegaJolt unit I'm
building.
I haven't yet bought an engine but suspect getting a pre 1975 unit in good condition is going to be difficult.
Is it possible to get a carburetted engine through the SVA emmissions requirements if using a later engine? I realise I will need a Cat.

Build it with the Zetec, then before SVA replace it with a crossflow, pass SVA then put any engine you like in and only have to pass the visible smoke
test.
Unless I'm missing something ?
Building a car with one engine and then swapping for another isnt a hugely simple job and makes it a lot more expensive to do, surely it would be far simpler to just slap a cat on it and play around until you can pass emissions with the engine you actually want?

And you can re-use the xflow exhaust with minimal fettling.
Sorry, I obviously meant to say 1995 not 1975! No wonder cryoman agreed it would be difficult.
I did consider using an older engine just for the SVA and then changing it but it does seem a bit of a nonsense.
Has anyone actually achieved SVA on carbs with a post 1995 engine?

Take out the Zetec, leaving the gearbox in place, make up some mounts and drop the crossflow in.
It'd be worth it to me just so I could change engines at will with no need to worry about emmisions![]()
i agree with chris what a pain in the ass job
just stick the engine in thats actualy going in the car
Isnt there something to do with mot's and DVLC computers logging all a cars spec that kinda puts a stop to just swapping an engine over ?
You have to tell the DVLA if you change your engine. You can change the engine on any car though.
Pre 95 silvertop zetecs are cheap and easy to find and will be easier to pass on carbs. You can switch to a blacktop very easily later if you want to. Don't think you would notice much difference.
Re the MoT, yes all details are now logged, but not usually engine no.'s as they're often illegible anyway. Yes you should tell DVLA if you
change it, but Mot ignores everything but visible smoke on anything "Q" plated. Other than that it's all age related, buy something pre
'95 & all is OK
