03 R1 AIS Connection
highspeeddirt - 28/12/05 at 05:02 PM

I've almost finished modifying my 2003 R1 loom and just need to check on the AIS connection. This has been removed from the engine so there is no solonoid to connect to. Should the wires, brown/red and red/yellow, be spliced or left open? I am using the bike clocks so I don't want any error codes.

No need to splice or short anything I believe. Just tie it up and forget about it.

How are you blocking off the ports. Have you threaded into the head or have you blocked it at the hardened metal pipe?

I drilled and tapped the angled metal pipes that go into the head. After that I had to take the head off to get all the bits of swarf out of the head and cylinders! If I was doing it again I think I would try something else.

You can quite easily pull the angled pipes out and just tap the hole in the head to take a 10mm button head bolt, I did think about tapping them but they are bloody hard steel and i was very hard to get at them properly with a tap wrench.
Initially I just sat there for about 15 minutes wiggling one of the pipes from side to side with a screwdriver up it trying to wiggle it out, but it didnt seem to be actually doing anything other than go from side to side. Then I pulled a little too hard outwards and bent the elbow so it was slightly straighter. Initially I thought Id be swearing as it was now weaker and liable to break off inside but once doing that about 10 wiggles and it was out - I guess bending it a little distorted the insert into the head very slightly and made it naturally come out. I then did the other three in about 2 minutes flat!
