Put the 1st BEC on the road ? I don't know the answer its not a trick question.
I remember seeing what I think was the 1st Autogrss cars in the early 80's with bike engines in, but what about the road ?
I'd guess that you'll have to go way back to the 1920s or 30s to find the first bike engine in a car...
...they were fond of that sort of trick in those days!

If you mean modern bike engine in what should have been a car-engined car, the first one I ever saw was in 2000. That was an R1-Phoenix belonging to a
chap named Andy Borris!

Obviously loads from years ago, but if you're talking modern era superbike engine in a road going kit car, that would be Pat Jackson with the
blade powered F27.
Although, I thought of it a year before that obviously...
Still think the Light Car Company Rocket was a superb bit of kit though.

In recent times, F27 (nlade) and Pell Genesis (ZZR1100) are often creditted with the honour of popularising bike engines.
Then you've got Z cars with (I think) the first roadgoing Twins that really got the spotlight...

There was a programme on satelite tv (can't remember which channel) called Gary Numans Cars where gary went out in a Fireblade Caterham and some
bloke at the track told Gary that the driver of said car developed the bec / caterham set up. I'm not sure if he meant just for caterham or
7's in general. I was told that caterham invented the idea when i got into kit cars a few years ago.

Sorry guys, I was thinking of the "superbike" engine into a 7 or other similar kit. I didn't make myself too clear.
I saw a programme when F1 cars were changing from front engine to rear and some chap fitted a 650cc Norton twin behind the seat,if I remember the name I'll be back

i had a ride at donnington in one of the first f27's a purpley blue blade powered affair with 115 bhp, that feeling never went away, had to have ever since that moment!think it was about 98/99.
Think that was the 1st one and IIRC, it's still going today with the same engine.

In the late fifties a mate of mine built a special using the engine from the Arial Square Four motor cycle. It had a chassis made from wood, plans for
which came from a Yank Mag, and the running parts from an austin, (what model, can't remember now). Hell what a field day the SVA man would have
with that. Give him a severe attack of the vapours.
First one I saw was a fair few years ago in the Pell Genesis, based in Bradford.
I can vouch that road going BEC kit cars date back at least to the early '80s
Years ago a relative of mine had a kit car called a "Stimulator", it was built down in Devon somewhere (Exeter rings a bell) by a small kit
car company, and was based on Mini running gear with a mid mounted Honda CB900 air cooled engine chain driving a converted mini diff.
It never had much bodywork to speak of and the geometry etc on it was shocking (about 15° change from -ve to +ve camber on bump!), but it had about
100bhp and only weighed ~500kgs so was still pretty brisk. He bought it back in the mid '80s and was road legal, but used it mostly for blasting
round the fields in. Sadly it was left to rust away in the corner of the yard so no longer exists, and although we think there were 2 or 3 built, Ive
never come across or heard of another one.
I did see it years ago shortly before it was chopped up and have pestered him a couple of times to dig out some pics of it, I'll have another nag
next time I see him.
