Bec upgrade from a CBR1000F?
Moorron - 21/4/06 at 11:10 AM

Hi lads, I need to know if anyone has upgraded their BEC to a larger engine and what did they go for as the upgrade.

Im toying with the idea of a bigger engine for my Indy, but I am unsure of legal issues and what choices to make.

I have a CBR1000F 135BHP '89'? engine at the moment and was wondering if its worth the hassle to fit a ZX12 engine (a busa is too costly) or if its best to go for a more modern R1 engine and possible turbo it at a later date. I contacted holeshot to see if they do a turbo kit for my current engine, they said its to much work for a one off so that put a stop to that idea. I don’t mind turboing it myself if I could find the info on the bits I don’t know about, I can make the headers up, intercooler and all pipework at work it’s the mods to the electrics and fuelling I don’t have a clue on, for all I know the engine might not take any sort of forced induction anyway.

Any info on my current engine or a possible upgrade would be very helpful.

Regarding the legal side, if I fit a newer engine will this effect the MOT emissions test or will it just be a matter of updating the log book and insurance?

Engine will make no difference come MOT time. It's just a matter of amending your V5 and insurance cover. Personally, I think the ZX12R would be a good upgrade. Much easier to drive due to lots of torque. But then I'm biased

erm......lol

its great as it is, but i do feel the lack of power around 80mph and wanted to gear it so its top speed it about 130 not 110-115, if i fit a lower ratio diff now i will loose its fantastic ecceleration. I say all this without trying the nitrous tho.

i cant not modify a car, even if it is as nice as this one, its in my blood. (from radio controlled cars to my current daily runner).

..its great as it is, but i do feel the lack of power around 80mph - sounds like it needs a rolling road/dyno session and wanted to gear it so its top speed it about 130 not 110-115, if i fit a lower ratio diff now i will loose its fantastic ecceleration. I think you mean higher ratio

lower ratio as in lower number

= less reduction, less acceleration, higher top speed.

might be referred to as higher geared but it is a lower (smaller) ratio.

meh it's all a bit confusing isn't it

Personally, I'd try a lower ratio diff first. (Cos it's cheapest ) Something like a 3.38:1 or even a 3.14 (If I could find one ) I doubt you'd notice any difference in acceleration and it'll give you the greater top speed that you're after. Like Kissy say's, it would also benefit from a tuning session on a rolling road (assuming it hasn't been tuned already) If this doesn't get you the performance you're after, then start looking at engine transplants.

LMAO

The car has been to TTS to be tuned but some time ago - if bike carbs are anything like the twin 40s I ran once-upon-a-time on a Vauxhall, it could probably do with another session!

P.s. Lift yellow switch cover, flick to up; set controller to 100% power with no build-up time and try that! You may as well - the system is there!

As Chris says Areo Dynamics play a big part.

I have a blackbird my brother a zx12 we was out yesterday burning up the roads with the zx12 in front of me i can easily keep up pusshing him along at all speeds and from standing still and he has a westfield aeor screen fitted made a big differance,

but when i am in front with just a mk screen he is all over me like a rash big time especially on acceleration from standing start.

but once you are going around 80 -90 + (alledgelly) if thats how its spelt there is not alot between them if you are out of the slip streem except his hat stays on mine dosnt

but they do say the aero screen can be worth 5+ mph on top end.

much cheaper performance upgrade???

i think the engine is fine, doesnt seem to sound or act like it needs tuning. i think i am just getting use to the performance. i need to get the notrous bottle filled up first and i have to travel to dudly to do this. i will go when my range rover bottle needs filling.

will the lsd bit from my curretn one bolt into a 3.38?
