Spark Plug Leads
Robert Ryan - 15/5/06 at 07:50 PM

I am fitting a R1 engine to my MNR, anyone know where I can buy exstended spark plug leads. And at what sort of price.

Thanks Rob

Not sure they have 'leads' as such... I think each spark plug has it's own coil pack therefore no need with special spark plug leads. It may depend of year of engine... so check that out first! HTH

Buy a length of supressed HT lead, and unscrew the stock leads from the coils (you will have to break and remove the epoxy holding them in first)...

Screw in the newuns and redo the epoxy...

Or alternatively just mount the coils nearer to the engine on a bracket. Plenty of peeps have done this and it seems to work fine. Certainly saves having to risk breaking the coil pack when you crack the epoxy off.

my coils are mounted on my r1 airbox

I had nowhere suitable to mount my R1 coils (99 carbed engine) without getting longer leads, so I bought some PVC-copper-core HT lead from Vehicle Wiring Products (58p/metre) and epoxy'd them into the coil packs as mentioned above and suggested elsewhere. I was told that a copper conductor was the best to go for. You need to be a bit brutal to get the stock leads out of the packs (you have to break the little plastic 'tags' but they will come free!

Which reminds me - how can I check with a multimeter that I have made a good connection between HT lead and coil pack?

the simples way is measure every way you can, but do it on both coils (the new/recon one and a old good one).

that way you are sure they are identical if it is measureable...

in fact i have no idea what the secondary coil side is attached to.

Sow suggest just start and try!

Tks

Ferrino,

Is the HT cable supplied by VWP marked as per SVA requirements?

I don't think it is marked with anything.
