got all my pedals connected up tonight everything works perfectly, not driven it anywhere just been inching forward in the garage, but won't go into second, will this redeem itself once we're moving properly, can't seem to remember my balde being that unwilling to go into second? anyone else's gearbox the same? '99 r1

it can be hard to change gear when stationary, have you tried rocking the car back and forwards whilst doing the selector?

Try bringing the clutch up whilst in neutral, then dip the clutch and selecting the gear. I dont generally go straight into second so am not sure how how difficult that would be, but on both the blade and the R1 if you come to a standstill or start the engine up with the clutch dipped, you often need to bring the clutch up in neutral then dip it again before the gears will select.

Kawasaki's (zx9 anyway) have 3 ball bearings that prevent you changing directly to 2nd from neutral. Only when moving the ball bearings get thrown outwards allowing it to got in 2nd gear. Don't know if Yamahas are the same???

Not sure TBH, you can go through the box without the engine running by wiggling the output shaft to align the dogs so I imagine it doesnt have any kind of centrifugal system like that, but I cant recall ever trying to go straight into second, usually by habit just find first then go from there.

Kev, just so we're clear are you trying to go straight into second from neutral, or are you starting in 1st and then trying for 2nd? Either way I assume you've double checked your linkage etc to ensure you have enough throw to go in that direction?

Kev if you have enough throw on the selector linkage and it still wont select sounds like a broken return spring on the selector dogs easy to check remove selector shaft cover snd you will see it on selector dogs
you can also check selection mechanism with the shaft removed should be able to turn drum by hand
