don't mean to wee on anyone's parade but I bought the one as pictured above for about £35 delivered off ebay. I'm guessing the model marc mentioned is a different one?!

Yep, that's what I thought Ned - eBay has quite a few at the moment - might be a different model though.

sorry when i say optimate its actually a company called ctek, they where recommend over the optimates by my uncle
here is some of their blurb ( most important bit is proper compatability with gel batteries )

Designed and developed in Sweden by some of the worlds leading experts on battery technology, C-TEK chargers have become the best-selling chargers of their type in Scandinavia. Whether you want to charge batteries in a boat, a car, a truck or bus, a caravan, motor home or a motorbike, there is a C-TEK charger available which will ensure that you never suffer from a dead or poorly-performing battery ever again.

Part of the attraction of C-TEK chargers is that they can be used with any type of lead-acid battery (Wet, MF, VRLA, AGM and GEL), in all conditions, for any length of time and in complete safety. Just connect the charger to the battery and walk away. As long as the battery isn't faulty, C-TEK's intelligent, multi-stage charging regime will ensure that it's fully charged to its maximum capacity. Even sulphated batteries that won't respond to an ordinary charger can be completely revived thanks to the pulse maintenance stage in all C-TEK models. All models have full protection against short circuits and reverse polarity, are tough, weatherproof, easy to use and, they even look good!

C-TEK chargers have undergone stringent testing by several well known car manufactures, looking for a suitable charger to supply to their customers who may not use their cars for months at a time.

RazMan - 25/5/06 at 03:58 PM

Which model of the range is it Marc?
CTEK™ MULTI XS 3600?

marc n - 25/5/06 at 05:32 PM

yep thats the one although it appears they are cheaper on ebay ?? form the pricing i got they must be buying in batchs of 250 a time, at least it shows the ones on ebay are good value if nothing else

best regards

marc

JoaoCaldeira - 25/5/06 at 09:48 PM

I don't think that any of these chargers (Optimate and CTek 3600) are good for those that like me use a bike battery (10 - 12aH).
I do have a bike that has the same battery as the R1, and the manual says to use a charger puting out a max of 1,5 amp.

On the other hand, the CTek Multi XS 800 seems a very valid option.
For those using a car battery, the 3600 seems quite good.

Marc: the new plane uses a 12v battery and after leaving your place it will never stop again thanks.

Optimate is specifically for bike batteries. Ive used one for many years on bikes and jetskis, Ive never had a problem. Ive even seen it recover a battery from a mates ZXR from about 3.5v which we considered to be completely dead.
They are the single most used charger on the bike world but I do know more and more people are using Oxford Oximisers.

I cant see why any of these would present problems for a bike battery.

IIRC the optimate3 puts out about 0.5 amps charge which is ideal for keeping the battery fresh with no risk of overcharging.

Rgds

Richie
