what battery is best ?
marcotuinenburg - 29/5/06 at 06:54 PM

Hi,

Im trying to find out what's the best battery for my BEC.
I'm building a MK Indy with SC33 E fireblade engine from 1999.
The Haynes says 12 Volt, 8 Ah but do i need more amps because of the extra lighting for the car ?
And do i need heavier fuses ?

Thanks,

Marco

most people just use the bike battery, its lightweight and can happily power all the lights etc.

I've gone for an Odyssey PC535 battery, it's light but has a higher amperage.

The Odyssey will just give you more cranking power (which is nice) A bike engine only requires a bike battery - it's the alternator which might not be able to keep up with your electrical equipment.

never had a prob just using bike battery, nice small light n compact.

Aha, thanks for your advice.

I will get a new bikebattery this week.

I'd suggest getting a slightly bigger bike battery than 8Ah though, such as a 12Ah YTX12. I had a 9Ah one originally with my blade and although it was generally fine, it did occasionally need the jump leads across it if the car hadnt been driven for a month or two, so its nice to have that extra capacity especially if you're not planning on putting a 24/7 trickle charger on it (Optimate etc) to keep it totally fresh all the time.

Yeh Id go for a 10Ah minimum.

Not wanting to contradict Chris, but beware the YTX12 is a 10Ah, the YTX14 is the 12Ah.

Ar5e about face I know and an easy mistake

Ah yep sorry, I had a YTX9 before but that was probably 8Ah?
