Been looking at a couple of early wesfield SE's 90-94 and wanted to know a few things about them. I wanted to find out if a R1 would fit? and
what about the running gear, would it be up to the R1?

Shame on you lot!! Westfield started out much the same as many of todays Locost manufacturers, making chassis for self-build kit cars - and still
do.
The Westie chassis is a good design and well proven over many years (mines 1986), and well capable of taking almost any engine that will fit. A good
basis for any build.
Mind you, they can have some snobby owners - but this forum doesn't seem immune either.
In all seriousness, an R1 will fit in a narrow Westie, it been done by Fluke Motorsport amongst others, albeit with an IRS not a live axled car like
most of the early cars would be.
The running gear is pretty much identical to Locost, ie Escort Mk2 rear axle if a live axled, or Escort Mk2 diff mounted in a Westie housing if IRS,
then latterly Sierra diff. At that older end of your scale some kits might be "Pre Lit" cars which look remarkably like Caterhams, hence the
LITigation process that ended up with Caterham winning a court battle with Westfield for copyright in the late 80's, which in turn led to
Westfield changing their design and look slightly with "post lit" cars.
Best bet though would be to post the question over at the WSCC Forum, they are generally
a friendly bunch over there too

You got MAC#1 / MK / MNR / Luego / GTS - so many good manufacturers and so many options - you will regret building your own every time something goes
wrong - but once it starts taking shape - every battle won against ill fitting parts will taste sooooo sweet!
Trust me you can't beat the feeling!

Not really.
Mine is a 1986 Pre-Lit built for a Ford Xflow, into which I am now shoehorning an RV8 out of a wrecked TVR. Majority of opinions state that it will
rip the rear axle out in the first 500 yards - only time will tell 
But what the hell; it will sound awsome as it does it!
