Engine rattle
tks - 11/7/06 at 05:40 AM

Hi!,

due to situation, i have disconnected the prop shaft to the engine.

Yesterday i was testing the gears and i noticed a ticking/knocking noice when on low revs and it gets louder when in higher gear..

anyone knows what this is?

i thought that the gears where driven to slow and then vibrate or something...??

when you accelerate the engine a bit the noise/knock dies... could it be a bearing???

Tks

Most likely backlash in the gears... nothing to worry about (probably)

I investigated yesterday a bit, but also when in neutral it makes this noise..?ŋ

I tried to find where it exactly came from but its very very difficult.

Its a pain in the **se and very annoying me.

I Will need to take the engine out, put it up side down. take every thing off to search for a rattle... the main thing i donīt like are that its needed to loossen up the main crankshaft bearing bolts...

will try to make a movi maybe that way we/you can better judge...

the strangest thing for me is, is that if i accelerate nothing happens no noise just the beautifull screaming of the engine...

the ratle hasnīt rythem to!

How is the noise if i would have a bearing without cage (only balls left)???

Can the overhaul be done like the hayness says? or should i be wise and let a motor shop do the job?

what would happen if the spring had broken wich we have on some pinion (its like a double pinion and always makes contact due to that spring???

the good thing about overhauling is that you can see what you have. (you cant when buying new)

The bad thing is that its quite a delicated job and being a bike engine even more!

advice me

would you overhaul?
also now in the summer
it doesnīt make sound when a bit on the revs.

They sometimes have a problem with the gear drive to the cams which sounds like a knocking and isn't always there.

will investigate in the paperbin then.

(the sump) maybe i find some crap wich can point me out in the direction.

Try balancing your carbs/tb's. It could very easily be backlash in the clutch, which make BEC's sound dreadful at tickover. It's been a 'problem' with multi-cylinder bike engines since they were invented. It doesn't cause any damage, just sounds awful!

Once you have a smooth tickover the rattle will go.

Try the old 'Screwdriver in the ear' trick, you may be able to isolate the noise to one side of the engine. If so, it may be a bit of cam follower rattle. If it 'sounds' like its on both sides it could still be cam related, try getting down to the crankcase for a listen. (a long screwdriver)

The VFR is a beatifully engineered engine but it does have a lot of moving parts, as posted may just be backlash. Honda clutches can also make all sorts of noises. Does the noise go when the clutch is released?

all the noise is there when clutch is released.

sow when in gear and in neutral.

I want to try today what happens if i pull in clutch and stop the complete box from turning the axles..

(sow nothing is driven) then i will listen if the sounds is on..

my feeling says that it has something to do with the gearbox and nothing else.

(its on that side of the engine)

maybe i have a finger bended wich almost pulls in gear???

true is that when in gear noise is the same.

What about a worn clutch bearing?
would it make noise??

Clutch released = not engaged ie peddal pressed.

My Blackbird makes a whooshing and whining noise when clutch lever is out and in neutral... qute normal i'm told

knockng...

not whoosing..

the cam gear make such a noise..(whoosing)

this is more like knock wich hasn't any kind of rythem..

we shall see
