(and is it worth getting one?)

Whilst I have my spare engines in bits, I'm looking at potential mods / upgrades.

Anyone ever used a lock up clutch? Would it be useful or a hinderance in a BEC?

I use one... Fine for my application and works very well. Been in the car for a year or so with no probs...

Oohps, sorry - forgot that bit...

The pawls are thrown out by centrepetal (?) force and 'push' the clutch plates together... Just a flash name for a centrifugal clutch really.

To increase the force on the clutch you add washers to the nut/bolt arrangement - up to 6 per pawl, which would probably push the back of the engine out of it's case!

Currently I'm running with soft springs (about twice the rate of Barnett/honda ones) and one washer per. I have run with very heavy springs that were four times the rate of Barnett/Honda jobbies and no washers - but was a tad over kill.

So it stops clutch slip! Cool. But does it make the clutch harder to open? I already have a set of EBC uprated springs ready to go in.

Do the aero aids work? Mine lifts like a ba57ard at high speed (officer)!

Only at high revs and then not too much. When I had the special HD spring I sorted out the clutch was a bit 'stiff'... much more comfy with the softer springs.

When pulling away the lockup really isn't doing a lot... I can feel my one pushing back at you from around 6000 - 8000rpm but I tend not to use the clutch on up changes for 3/4/5/6 and only dip it on the downs.

My experience of EBC/Barnett springs/frictions is 'not a good one'. I came away from using them with the feeling they were made from plasticine

A full Barnett jobbie lasted 12 laps of Bruntingthorpe before melting... while the current clutch has been in the car for over a year!
