The R1 5jj engine in our vortx has a bad oil leak once the engine temp is up a bit. It seems to come from behind the black clutch cover.
It looks like it had been sealed before with some kind of Hylomar stuff, question is, can I seal it again with high temp silicone or more hylomar or
should I have a gasket. If so where can I get gaskets on internet?
Cheers gents!
Mine leaks a bit when hot (the oil gets really thin at temperature)
It should have a gasket, I got mine from my local Yamaha dealer.
I wouldn't use sealer, as you may get bits of sealer in the oil.
Steve
Gasket it is, can't just leave it as it would be empty after about 20 miles.
Cheers
Is it the clutch cover gasket or is it the hole where the clutch lever comes out?
The gasket is less than a tenner from your local Yamaha shop. They'll probably have to order one for you though.
You may want to check that the cover hasnt cracked near the lower mounting lugs. This is a common fault on the R1 and is caused by over tightening
the bolts that fix the clutch cover to the crankcase.
If it is just the gasket as said buy a new one but make sure when you fit it that you smear some engine oil on the mating surfaces as this will reduce
the risk of tearing the gasket when you remove the cover in the future.

Found a site wemoto.com who can send the parts faster than the local shops can order them in. I'll check the cover for cracks, and thanks for tip
on oil smear, does that mean they are reusable or is it just to help get them off?
Anyone any idea of torque settings?
Oh and while I think of it are there any websites with advice/diagrams etc on R1 engines (as opposed to whole bike) can't find any! My engine has
unattached pipes, kinked pipes etc.. Haynes has been ordered but a site may help too!
Thanks again.
There's always the service manual. Winston Todge has links to somewhere that has them all.
I've got a service manual on disc somewhere. I'll have a shifty for it.
Lyn.
I have managed to reuse the same gasket 3 or 4 times with no tears / leaks.
As for the engine manual as stated above the official R1 service manual is the best source of info.
If you cant get hold of this send me a U2U and I'll drop a CD copy in the post.

I use some LM grease to do the job.
Cheers all, the co-owner of the car, Jon, has ordered the disc somewhere. Haynes ordered cheap from Amazon last night.
Can't wait to get it back on the road now.
